B/R Exclusive: Seattle Mariners' Felix Hernandez Discusses Pepsi MAX Campaign

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

If you build it, they will come. This time, that's not coming from a voice in the sky, but from Pepsi MAX, which is making some special promises with its new Field of Dreams campaign.

In this case, "it" is a ballot, "they" are Major League Baseball future or current Hall of Famers and "you" is, well, you.

Oh, and "come" might actually mean "wait for you to come to them."

All you have to do is fill out Pepsi MAX's ballot for the ultimate All-Star team, and you are entered for a chance to play against the All-Star team with nine of your luckiest friends.

According to Pepsi's website, you can vote up to 25 times per day until September, when four fan finalists will be announced. Those finalists will vie against each other for votes to determine the overall winner.

The ballot contains all-time greats such as Ken Griffey Jr., Ozzie Smith, Frank Thomas, Johnny Bench, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux and many others.

To further promote their campaign, Pepsi MAX has teamed up with MLB and many current superstars.

Among the promoters are CC Sabathia, Andrew Bailey, Billy Butler, Justin Upton, Austin Jackson, Torii Hunter, Evan Longoria and Seattle Mariners All-Star pitcher Felix Hernandez, who I got a chance to talk to about his involvement.

"It's a great project," said Hernandez during a phone interview. "They're making a great idea for the fans. They can go online and vote for their favorite players and field a dream team. I got involved, and it's great."

That involvement, Felix said, was mostly being a pitchman. That included appearing at Fred Meyer in Ballard on Thursday to sign autographs and promote the contest. He was disappointed to not be involved with the Pepsi commercials, but still felt honored to be part of the program.

And as for Felix's votes?

All Mariners, of course.

The 25-year-old made it clear that when he voted last month, Griffey, Johnson and Edgar Martinez were all on his ballot.

"Those were no-brainers," he joked.
