New York Mets: Top Potential September Call-Ups

Robert KnapelJun 7, 2018

With the New York Mets out of the playoff race, there is not much to look forward to the rest of the year. However, getting a look at some of the young September call-ups is always exciting and provides a bit of a look into the future for the Mets.

Some of these players have gotten cups of coffee in the majors before, but others will be seeing their first major league action. This is a great chance to see some of the players who will be fighting for a spot on the roster next season.

Zach Lutz

1 of 5

Zach Lutz was the Mets selection in the fifth round of the 2007 MLB draft. He has had a major issue staying healthy since then. Lutz has played over 100 games only once in his career.

This is a shame because when Lutz has been on the field, he has been very productive. The 25-year-old is a career .289 hitter and has eight home runs in 41 games this year.

Lutz plays third base, so he likely will see most of his at-bats come from off the bench if he does get called up.

Dale Thayer

2 of 5

The New York Mets could use some bullpen help. Dale Thayer is not a prospect at age 30, but he is someone who could help the Mets next season.

Thayer has already had a short appearance in the majors this season, but he could have an extended role next season. He has pitched well in the minors this year for Triple-A Buffalo.

Josh Satin

3 of 5

One thing holding Josh Satin back from a possible September call-up is the fact that he is not currently on the Mets' 40-man roster. The Mets do have an open spot on the roster.

Satin plays all around the infield, but he has spent most of his career at second base. Given that manager Terry Collins thinks that second base should be an offensive position, Satin could be competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster next season.

Between Double-A and Triple-A, Satin is hitting .331 with 12 home runs and 72 RBI.

Jordany Valdespin

4 of 5

Another possible option for the Mets second base position is Jordany Valdespin. He should get a chance this September to show his talents at the major league level.

Valdespin is just 23 years old and is playing in Triple-A. He is also having the best offensive season of his career. Valdespin is hitting .289 with 15 home runs and 33 stolen bases.

Fernando Martinez

5 of 5

It seems as if Fernando Martinez has been around the New York Mets organization forever. He signed with the Mets in 2005 and he is only 22-years-old.

Martinez has seen limited playing time in the majors for each of the past three years. He has also dealt with a number of injuries. Martinez has been limited to only 63 games at Triple-A this year because of injuries. He does have eight home runs and 30 RBI this year.

It no longer appears that Martinez will develop into a superstar. However, he is still very young and has potential. He will have a chance to make the Mets out of spring training next year.
