20 Reasons Roy Williams Has Finally Found the Right Team
Despite an up-and-down first seven seasons in the NFL, Roy Williams has finally found a new team in the Chicago Bears.
After a disappointing season in which he caught only 37 passes for 530 yards and five touchdowns, Roy Williams wants to get back on track. At one point considered one of the better receivers in football, Williams has a long way to go if he wants to get back to Pro Bowl form.
Williams is hoping that this will be the perfect fit for him and here are 20 reasons why he made the right decision coming to Chicago.
20. Solid Running Game Opens Up the Passing Game
1 of 20Having a feature back in Matt Forte is only going to help the re-emergence of Roy Williams. It is undeniable in football that when a team has a strong running game, defenses have to game plan to stop it, which consequentially opens up the passing game.
Although all very solid running backs in Dallas, the three headed monster of Felix Jones, Marion Barber, and Tashard Choice was not a backfield that intimidated opposing teams.
Williams now finds himself teamed up with Forte, who averaged 4.5 yards per carry last year, which was the highest in his career. Expect teams to load the box against Forte and make the Bears beat them in the air, which is why the Bears went out and got Williams this offseason.
19. Help of Big Tight Ends
2 of 20In order to have a successful passing attack, a quarterback needs good protection to throw the ball. Even though the Bears still have question marks on the offensive line, they now have two large tight ends who are very quality blockers.
The Bears will need both Matt Spaeth and Kellen Davis to provide Jay Cutler with a lot of protection, so that he can get the ball to Roy Williams.
Having two quality blocking tight ends will most likely increase the number of targets that Williams will receive. The Bears will most likely use both tight ends for blocking more so than receiving, which will help Williams become a major factor in the Chicago Bears pffense.
18. No Going Against the CB's of Philadelphia
3 of 20With the addition of Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to the Philadelphia Eagles, watch out for the Philadelphia defense to take star receivers out of games.
In Dallas, Williams had to play the Eagles twice a year and it is a good thing that he got out of there when he did because the Eagles have the cornerbacks to have one of the best passing defenses in the league.
17. Reunion with Darryl Drake
4 of 20Bears wide receivers coach Darryl Drake is someone that Roy Williams has known for a long time and has a great history with.
Drake recruited Williams from Odessa Permian High School in Texas, while he was the wide receivers coach at the University of Texas. He there coached and taught Williams some of the skills that turned him into a star receiver in college.
Drake is now coaching with the Bears and it appears that the reunion between the two is perfect timing.
“He makes the game fun,” Williams said. “He knows when to get on you and he knows when to back off. He has my trust. That is one of the reasons why I went to Texas. He is just one of the best coaches I have ever been around.”
16. Terrible Grass at Solider Field Gives Advantage to Home Team
5 of 20Any one that says that the playing surface of a football field cannot be much of an advantage for either team has never seen Soldier Field.
For years the Park District of the city of Chicago has maintained the playing surface and it has often come up as at topic of major controversy. The Chicago Bears "Family Night" practice on August 5th was cancelled due to the poor condition of the field.
Being able to practice on the field and grow accustomed to the playing style will benefit the Bears greatly throughout the year.
The Bears wideouts should have huge advantages over their defenders, with precise cutting and route running. Watch for many defenders to slip on the field, just as they have in years past.
It's a joke that a team in the NFL has a field that is managed this poorly, but if one team needs to have the advantage on their side, Roy Williams must be glad that it's the Bears.
15. No Home Town Pressure
6 of 20Playing in front of your home crowd is always a great feeling, but sometimes the pressure can be too much to handle for some athletes.
When Roy Williams returned home to Texas with the Dallas Cowboys, everything was supposed to be great, but it simply didn't work out.
Williams only had 92 catches in about two and a half seasons in Dallas. There is no answer to explain the decrease in production for Williams in Dallas, but it very well may have come from the added pressures of playing in front of a home crowd that he grew up with.
In Chicago Williams gets a fresh start and is looking to make the most of it.
14. Dez Bryant
7 of 20In his rookie season, Dez Bryant made a huge impact for the Dallas Cowboys with his explosive receiving talents.
Bryant made the league know that he was the receiver of the future for the Dallas Cowboys and that he will be star in this league.
An aging veteran like Roy Williams cannot compete with Bryant's big-play ability, athleticism, and marketability. Williams got out of Dallas at the right time because another season as the third or maybe fourth option on the Cowboys would have made him a lost man in the NFL.
13. Miles Austin
8 of 20If Dez Bryant is the receiver of the future for the Dallas Cowboys, then Miles Austin is the receiver of the present.
Austin is just another receiver that Williams had to compete with. Austin is a legitimate top 10 wide receiver in the NFL and he proved it with his second consecutive 1,000 yard season.
They say everything is bigger in Texas and that definitely goes for the amount of talent on the receiving core in Dallas. Whether it would be from Dez Bryant or Miles Austin, Roy Williams has to be excited about being the premier receiver in Chicago.
12. Best Fans in the NFL
9 of 20"Who would win in a fight? Ditka or God? Trick Question, Ditka is God."
The legendary Superfans skit featuring fictional Bears fans was just an example of their die-hard nature. It is routine to see thousands of fans from all over the Chicago-land area drive a few hours down to Bourbonnais to watch Bears Training Camp.
People from Chicago love their baseball, basketball, and hockey, but football will always be at the heart of a Chicagoan.
Williams can expect to be playing in front of knowledgeable, passionate, and sold-out crowds at Soldier Field. He is now going to be playing in front of the best fans in football...Da Bears!
11. He's Coming with a Friend
10 of 20It's always easier to come to a new place when you have a friend. When the Bears went out and signed running back Marion Barber, Roy Williams found his friend.
After spending two and a half seasons together in Dallas, Williams and Barber have a history of working together and know how each other work.
The growing pains of coming to a new team are often tough and the two former Dallas Cowboys will need to lean on each other for help in adjusting to life in Chicago.
10. No Competition on Bears Roster
11 of 20Lots of speed. Lots of Dropped Balls. Lots of room for improvement.
The Bears have two of the quickest receivers in football with Devin Hester and Johnny Knox, but Bears fans have gotten very agitated over the past two seasons with the number of dropped balls by Bears receivers.
Roy Williams has already moved up to No. 2 on the Bears depth chart, and we can expect to see him in the starting lineup for the year. Williams is the only red zone threat that the Bears will have, and that is something that the Bears have been looking for for ages.
9. He Has the Confidence of His Coaches
12 of 20Widely recognized as a "players coach," Lovie Smith is the type of guy that you want to play under.
Even though many Chicago fans have shown disinterest in Lovie Smith as head coach of the Bears, there is no doubt that he has the respect of his players.
Lovie Smith has gone out publicly and supported Williams, expressing his excitement for the receiver to be on his team. Not only is Smith excited, but offensive coordinator Mike Martz is excited as well. Martz has called Williams an "elite" player, and already projected him to get 70-80 receptions.
8. Tony Romo-Jason Witten Relationship
13 of 20Many receivers in Dallas have expressed their disappointment in the favoritism that Tony Romo shows towards tight end Jason Witten on the football field.
Romo and Witten are roommates when the team is on the road, and their friendship has led to very successful chemistry on the field.
Witten received 128 targets last season from Romo, which doubled Williams' 64 targets that he received. When it comes to receiving it is is pretty simple: You can't catch the ball if it isn't thrown your way.
7. He's Instantly Put in the Starting Lineup
14 of 20As I mentioned earlier, Williams has already found himself as the Bears No. 2 receiver.
With a shortened training camp due to the NFL lockout, Williams has less time to train and impress scouts. Luckily for Williams, he doesn't need to impress the Bears in order to grab their attention.
The Bears went out and got Williams to be their receiver and they aren't going to pay him to sit on the bench.
6. Chance to Prove Everyone Wrong
15 of 20Playing in a large market like Chicago has made Roy Williams an instant topic of conversation.
Although some believe that the Bears have finally found their number one receiver, there are many doubters.
Many people believe that Williams is too slow, too old, or simply not good enough. If there is one thing to burn a fire in the belly of a professional athlete, it's doubters. Expect Roy Williams to play with a chip on his shoulder and be trying to turn doubters into believers.
5. The Bears Are a Contender
16 of 20Throughout his NFL career Roy Williams has never been on a contending team. While a member on the Dallas Cowboys, he saw teams that constantly under achieved and minimal postseason success.
Williams is now a member of the Chicago Bears who are the reigning NFC North Champions and were only one game away from the Super Bowl. If Roy Williams wants a chance to win a Super Bowl, then the Bears are a good choice.
After losing in the NFC Championship game, the Bears realized that they needed to make some changes to upgrade their lineup and they believe that the addition of Roy Williams is one of the moves that can push them over the top.
4. The Red Zone
17 of 20Nothing wins over fans then someone who can put points on the boards.
Even if Roy Williams doesn't lead the team in receiving yards, Williams will be glorified in Chicago if he can score touchdowns in the red zone.
Expect Roy Williams' big 6'3" frame to be Jay Cutler's favorite target to finish off drives. Despite two "down season" in Dallas, Williams still was able to haul in 12 touchdowns in the red zone and the Bears are looking for more of that.
3. Jay Cutler Loves Big Targets
18 of 20While in Denver, Jay Cutler was a Pro Bowl quarterback and he didn't get to that point on his own. One of the reasons why Cutler was so great was a big teammate of his: Brandon Marshall.
Marshall is a very athletic and capable receiver, but what makes him so appealing is the fact that he is big. With Cutler throwing to him in Denver, Marshall had three straight seasons with at least 100 receptions.
Throughout his short tenure in Chicago, Cutler has asked numerous times for management to get him a big receiver and he now has him. Look for Cutler and Williams to be an effective combination all season long.
2. Back in the Mike Martz Offense
19 of 20In 2006 Roy Williams had the best season of his career with 82 receptions and over 1,300 yards receiving for the Detroit Lions. Much of the credit for Williams' success that season must go to his coach, Mike Martz.
Martz, now offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, has been reunited with his receiver and must be confident that he can revive the player's career.
A Mike Martz run offense is contingent on receivers who run precise routes and are familiar with the various offensive schemes. Bears fans can only hope that Williams can jump back into the offense and feel like he never left.
1. A Fresh Start
20 of 20In sports, there is nothing like a fresh start. Roy Williams has gotten that fresh start in Chicago.
The Bears only signed Williams to a one-year deal, which shows that they are expecting phenomenal things from him. Williams now has the opportunity to play football and forget about his past.
What's happened in the past is over. Roy Williams is now a Chicago Bear and that is something that he has never been able to say.
