NFL Free Agents with the Least Cap-Friendly Contracts

Eli NachmanyJun 7, 2018

This NFL free agency, many free agents found new homes or stayed put in their original cities.

With a $120 million hard cap, huge spending is rather discouraged, but these teams and players didn't exactly get the memo.

Such huge contracts will cripple teams now and down the road.

Here are some free agents with very unfriendly salary cap contracts in no particular order.

Eric Weddle

1 of 4

Eric Weddle recently became the highest-paid safety in the NFL because...I'm not really sure.

The Chargers gave their safety a huge, five-year, $40 million contract with $19 million guaranteed.

Down the road, this huge contract will give the Chargers less flexibility with players more important than their free safety.

DeAngelo Williams

2 of 4

Despite the very short shelf life of running backs in the NFL, the Carolina Panthers took the initiative and gave DeAngelo Williams a huge offer to return to Carolina.

Williams is a top-flight running back, certainly, but he may not be as good in a few years despite his newly-inked five-year contract.

The Panthers gave their running back a five-year, $43 million contract with $21 million guaranteed.

Paul Posluszny

3 of 4

I am a huge Paul Posluszny fan, but if the Jaguars want to overpay him that much, no one is complaining in Buffalo.

Posluszny's numbers were a result of a very weak defensive line and linebacking corpsโ€”he will be a very average player in Jacksonville.

Average players don't get contracts for six years at $45 million with $15 million guaranteed.

Peyton Manning

4 of 4

I tried my best to leave quarterbacks (Kevin Kolb), wide receivers (Sidney Rice, Santonio Holmes), pass rushers (Charles Johnson, Ray Edwards) and cornerbacks (Nnamdi Asomugha, Johnathan Joseph) off.

However, when the Colts give Peyton Manning a franchise-crippling contract for five years at $90 million, something must be said.

The team has no way to build around Manning now...no surprise here.
