Miami Dolphins Losing Their Way for the Sake of the Running Game

Michael Heck Jun 7, 2018

Vince Young, gone. Kevin Kolb, gone, Matt Hasselbeck, gone. Dan Marino, still retired. Brett Favre, staying retired (thank God).

Jeff Ireland is banking the future of the Miami Dolphins on Kyle Orton. Rumor is that the deal has come to a stand still, as Kyle Orton's contract and what Miami is willing to offer in a trade have become murky waters.

Signing Vince Young could've been so easy. But the Miami Dolphins tend to go the way of being stubborn and difficult. Now, if Kyle Orton does not come to Miami, we will definitely see what Chad Henne is made of. After watching the debate on the NFL channel yesterday between Michael Lombardi and Jaime Dukes, we have a clearer view of how the NFL is struggling with Vince Young's personality and professionalism. Such insight has to be respected.

Michael Lombardi's perspective is that VY's overall identity around the league is that of an outsider. Nobody wants a person like Vince Young because of his invasive behaviors. He believes that his first contract will be that of a second-string quarterback (which we now know is true). Meanwhile, Jaime was adamant that Vince Young could've been with an organization which could help "re-socialize" an amazing quarterback.

The Miami Dolphins wanted nothing to do with Vince Young's potential and resurgence. The front office is too scared of making mistakes. That is how Dave Wannstedt coaches the Fins: run first and safe. They will probably pay for it in more than one way.

IF the Kyle Orton deal falls, everyone can point to the success of signing Reggie Bush. However, most people forget he's one notch above being a situational running back. Reggie Bush is not Devin Hester yet. He's a solid sign to round out the Miami Dolphins' backfield. He brings both speed and injury. We're all still hoping the Reggie from USC will show up. For a cool $5 million per year, I hope so.

What we remember is that the Dolphins passed on Drew Brees twice, twice. They have consistently bombed out when trying to draft a quarterback via the draft. I was humored when everyone was so excited about the signing of Patrick Devlin. Why? Really? I'm confused! He's an undrafted free agent, right? Hope is like infatuation; it'll make the wise become foolish.

We're clearly underachieving, folks. While New England is trading horribly low draft picks for former malcontent Pro Bowlers (and will rehab Mr. Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco because winning a Super Bowl is the only thing they haven't done), the Miami Dolphins are looking for Troy Aikman, while risking the success of the Miami Dolphins.

If I'm the Denver Broncos, I would quickly take a page from the Green Bay Packers. Let Kyle Orton play, let Tim Tebow learn the way. Instead, both teams are attempting to hold each other hostage for more, or less. Depends on which side you're on.

Reggie Bush is not the key to a Super Bowl. He might bring more people to the stadium. We all know the quarterback is the key cog to raising the Lombardi trophy.

And the Dolphins have banked that on this murky trade for Kyle Orton.
