NFL Free-Agent Signings: The Craziest Contracts Signed so Far

Tony SantorsaJun 7, 2018

As we're only three days into the 2011 NFL season after the four-month lockout, there have been many reported contracts and a lot of money has been thrown around in free agency.

All deals have been reported, but keep in mind, no transaction can happen until this Friday at 6 p.m. EST

Here are the craziest contracts agreed upon so far.

Santonio Holmes

1 of 7

Reported contract: five years, $50 million with $24 million guaranteed.

A $50 million contract with $24 million seems like a lot for a wide receiver that has only played two full NFL seasons and hasn't had one season with over 80 receptions and just one season with over 1,000 total receiving yards.

However, Santonio Holmes is an integral part of New York's offseason as he's not only Mark Sanchez' No. 1 receiver, he's their biggest playmaker.

Paul Posluszny

2 of 7

Reported contract: six years, $45 million with $15 million guaranteed.

Don't get me wrong, Paul Posluszny is a very talented and productive player, but he is simply not worth what price the Jacksonville Jaguars are willing to pay.

Posluszny has played four seasons in the league as a member of the Buffalo Bills and most recently accumulated a whooping 151 total tackles in 2010.

If I'm New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, I am certainly foaming at the mouth for the potential contract that he'll be looking for in 2013.

Charles Johnson

3 of 7

Reported contract: six years, $72 million with $32 million guaranteed and a $30 million signing bonus.

To me, this is the craziest contract of them all!

Charles Johnson is not worth this money and is definitely not worth a $30 million signing bonus.

Granted Johnson racked up 12 sacks for the Carolina Panthers last year, but that simply could be just a one-year wonder.

However, I'm assuming that the Panthers' management believes that Johnson is the next Julius Peppers, considering how much money they're going to pay him.

Doug Free

4 of 7

Reported contract: four years, $32 million with $17 million guaranteed.

I don't know about you, but $32 million seems like a lot for a guy that allowed five sacks last season protecting the Dallas Cowboys' quarterbacks blind side.

However, Doug Free is still young as he's only 27 years old, and the contract will expire when he's 31, so it doesn't exactly handcuff the Cowboys to him.

Sidney Rice

5 of 7

Reported contract: five years, $41 million with $18.5 guaranteed.

Sidney Rice is one talented wide receiver but has been very inconsistent in staying healthy.

The Seattle Seahawks are really taking on a long-term investment with a whole lot a risk—but there is definitely a very large reward possible.

DeAngelo Williams

6 of 7

Reported contract: five years, $43 million with $21 million guaranteed.

DeAngelo Williams is certainly a talented and dangerous running back, but this contract is simply too much of a gamble for the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers have now handcuffed themselves to a 28-year-old running back for five years when he hasn't played a full NFL season since 2008.

Do the Panthers not realize that NFL running back's shelf lives aren't very long?

Eric Weddle

7 of 7

Reported contract: five years, $40 million with $19 million guaranteed.

What are the San Diego Chargers doing?

Eric Weddle should not be the NFL's richest safety in league history—no way, he is not worth the money.

Granted Weddle is only 26 years old and has had some solid seasons with the Chargers, but he does not deserve to make more than safety Troy Polamalu
