Washington Redskins' Donovan McNabb to Minnesota Vikings Should Be Done Deal
Is Washington’s Donovan McNabb trying on the purple and gold? If his contract negotiations go through Wednesday afternoon, it looks like a uniform change really will be in order for the veteran quarterback.
If you follow any of your favorite NFL players on Twitter, you knew exactly when the 2011 NFL Lockout was coming to an end.
Michael Vick (@MikeVick), echoing the thoughts of teammates and fellow athletes throughout the league, tweeted “sound like we gonna to be back to work so soon!!!” on Thursday afternoon.

And with the end of the lockout came waves of trade rumors, negotiations, and free agency discussions. Among those? The long-speculated trade of McNabb to Minnesota.
According to NFL.com, the Minnesota Vikings agreed Tuesday to acquire McNabb… if he agrees to certain contract restructuring to be discussed on Wednesday. McNabb’s current contract slates him for $12.5 million plus a roster bonus with the Redskins—an amount Minnesota has said it cannot afford to pay. Should he agree to come to the midwest for less, it appears McNabb would be traded for late-round picks in 2012 and 2013.
If the 34-year-old QB wants to be a Viking as much as he’s said he does, however, one hopes the pay cut won’t be an issue.
McNabb graduated from Syracuse University and spent much of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. He has a career completion percentage of 59 percent and has thrown for 230 touchdowns over his 13 years in the NFL.
While with the Eagles, McNabb led his squad to three conference championships as well as the 2004 Super Bowl, in which Philadelphia fell to the New England Patriots.
Where does Minnesota’s current QB situation stand?
According to ESPN.com, sources have confirmed that Tavaris Jackson has agreed to a deal with the Seattle Seahawks after a five-year stint with the Vikings. That leaves Joe Webb—who still proves to be a shot in the dark—and Christian Ponder. Minnesota drafted Ponder at No. 12 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft.
How would Ponder feel about the addition of McNabb? Once again, we have social media to fill us all in. On Tuesday morning, the rookie QB (@cponder7) tweeted, “Excited to have McNabb join. Will learn a lot from a Pro Bowler. But that doesn’t mean I’m not still fighting to start week 1!”
A competition between two viable quarterbacks is something Vikings fans haven’t witnessed for awhile, and I’d say they’re more than ready.
So come on, Donovan… let’s see what you’ve got.
