NFL Free Agency 2011: 10 Receivers to Offset the DeSean Jackson Holdout

Mick AkersJun 7, 2018

With Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson beginning his holdout today, the Eagles should be looking to add a top wide receiver to give Jackson the idea that everyone is replaceable.

Jackson, who has been described as the most exciting NFL player when he has the ball in his hands, had a tremendous season last year hauling in 47 catches for 1,056 yards and six touchdowns.

Jackson also compiled 206 punt returns yards with one touchdown—yes the Miracle at the Meadowlands II 65-yard game-winning one.

Although Jackson will be tough to replace, there is a tremendous amount of wideout talent available on the free agent market this year.

Here are the 10 best wide receivers that could give DeSean Jackson a run for his money.

Braylon Edwards

1 of 10

Someone who is almost as quick as DeSean Jackson himself is New York Jets receiver Braylon Edwards.

Edwards' 2010 season was a very productive one seeing him rack up 904 yards and seven touchdowns on 53 receptions.

He could step in right away and give the Eagles what they would be missing if Jackson decides to holdout into the season.

Sidney Rice

2 of 10

The Minnesota Viking's Sidney Rice is arguably the best wide receiver available on the free-agent market this year and would be an adequate replacement for DeSean Jackson.

Rice missed much of 2010 due to migraine headaches but showed a flash of his 2009 performance in the six games he played last season.

Rice made 17 catches for 280 yards and two touchdowns last year, numbers that pale in comparison to his 2009 numbers where he had 83 receptions for 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns.

Adding a healthy Rice would make Philly fans forget about No.10 missing in the Eagles offensive scheme.

James Jones

3 of 10

The Green Bay Packers' James Jones is not a name being thrown around as much as other more recognizable names from this years free-agent crop, but he is a viable receiver that the Eagles should keep in mind should DeSean Jackson have a lenghty holdout.

Jackson pulled in 50 catches for 679 yards and five touchdowns for the Super Bowl Champion Packers last season.

His Super Bowl experiencing could come in handy at the end of the season, as the Eagles are expected to be serious Super Bowl contenders this season.

Malcom Floyd

4 of 10

Malcom Floyd of the San Diego Chargers could be a dark horse contender to possibly take over DeSean Jackson's load for the Philadelphia Eagles this year.

Coming off the best season of his career, Floyd tallied up 37 catches for 717 yards and six touchdowns and is expected to build off his success from last season.

The Eagles have many options to chose form in the free-agent market and should reach out to Floyd if some of the top-flight receivers are unobtainable beforehand.

Steve Breaston

5 of 10

A receiver who is up-to-par speed wise with DeSean Jackson and would make for a nice pickup for the Philadelphia Eagles is the Arizona Cardinals' Steve Breaston.

Breaston had a solid year but only yielded one touchdown on his 46 catches that accounted for 718 yards last season.

Having a quality quarterback like Michael Vick setting Breaston up could be a game changer for the receiver, as he never had that going for him last year due to the Cardinals quarterback problems.

Mike Sims-Walker

6 of 10

Mike Sims-Walker of the Jacksonville Jaguars could offer the Philadelphia Eagles a viable changeup for DeSean Jackson.

Sims-Walker is coming off to straight years of hauling in seven touchdowns and accounting for a total of over 1,400 yards on 106 catches.

Sims-Walker would be put into a position to reproduce his numbers form the past two years stepping in for Jackson and giving the Eagles reason not to miss him much this season.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh

7 of 10

T.J. Houshmandzadeh of the Baltimore Ravens would be a last resort type of pickup for the Philadelphia Eagles if DeSean Jackson decides to holdout.

Three years removed from recording 1,143 yards receiving with 12 touchdowns on 112 receptions, Houshmandzadeh has had good years since then but had a serious drop off in his production last season when he only had 398 yards on 30 catches, with three touchdowns.

If the Eagles were to pick up Houshmandzadeh, he would be the Eagles No. 2 receiver with Jeremy Maclin taking over the No. 1 spot.

Plaxico Burress

8 of 10

One can't talk Philadelphia Eagles and wide receivers without bringing up Plaxico Burress and signing someone to fill the void DeSean Jackson would create is no different.

Burress would be used differently than Jackson is with the Eagles. Jackson relies on his speed and agility to make touchdowns as Burress uses his height to nab passes over opposing defenders.

Though he would be a entirely different player than Jackson is, the Eagles would be doing themselves a disservice by not attempting to land Burress.

Lance Moore

9 of 10

Lance Moore of the New Orleans Saints is a receiver that help ease the pain of the Philadelphia Eagles if DeSean Jackson has a long holdout this season.

Moore is under the radar as far as free agents go this year, but his numbers would lead you to believe he was one of the top targets in free agency this year.

Moore pulled in 66 receptions for 766 yards and eight touchdowns last season with Drew Brees at the helm.

Moore would be a nice addition to the Eagles, giving them a player who has great scoring ability and has Super Bowl experience that could pay dividends for the Eagles if they make a deep post season run as expected.

Steve Smith

10 of 10

The Philadelphia Eagles could also chose to sign Steve Smith from rival to the North the New York Giants.

Smith had 48catches for 529 and three touchdowns in just seven games last year with Eli Manning running the Giants offense, and I fell with Vick Smith should continue to improve and prove his worth to the Eagles and the fanbase.

A healthy Smith with something to prove could help the Eagles a lot this season if Jackson decides waiting for his money is worth more than playing the game that gets him that money
