Fantasy Football Sleepers: Josh Freeman, Steve Breaston Top This Year's Sleepers

Brian DezelskeJul 26, 2011

In this day and age of Fantasy Football, it’s hard to call players sleepers.

Most of us who play fantasy sports tend to know what we are doing, which means we all know a little bit about every player out there.

We all have a couple players circled for what we call late-round steals, but the other guys in your league have those same players circled.  It’s not so much a matter of who you select, but when select them.

I have taken five fantasy players that you need to circle and seriously consider in the seventh round, eighth round and even later.

Donald Brown

1 of 5

5.  To say that Donald Brown has been somewhat of a disappointment since being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2009 would be an understatement.  He has only one 100 yard rushing game in his two year career, coming last season against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

His two seasons in the NFL have been hampered by injuries, and his playing time has been hampered by his lack of pass blocking ability.

However, the pending free-agency of Joseph Addai could land Donald Brown as the opening day starter.

The Colts did draft Delone Carter to help solidify the backfield, and to push Brown, but they will give the former first rounder the chance to be the guy in Indy should Addai sign somewhere else.

Don’t forget that Peyton Manning is coming off of neck surgery.  What better way to keep the best quarterback in the league healthy then to hand it off?

Mark Ingram

2 of 5

4.  Mark Ingram has goal-line touchdown thief written all over him.  With Pierre Thomas projected as the starter, Ingram will get most of his touches inside the five yard line.

You won’t have to worry about Reggie Bush taking carries away from Ingram, since Bush is used mostly in passing situations, that and the fact that it is very uncertain if Bush will even be back with the Saints.

Mark Ingram will be a great pick in that 10 to 12 round area.

Tim Tebow

3 of 5

3.  Tim Tebow is a great topic of debate for fantasy goers.  There is nobody on the fence when it comes to this guy.  It seems that people either love him or hate him.

He will be drafted higher than you think.  Mark it down right now, Tim Tebow will be top 8 fantasy quarterback this year if he stays healthy.

In his three starts, in 2010, he managed to put up 22, 22 and 27 points in weeks 15, 16 and 17 respectively.

In fantasy sports, statistics are king.  It does not matter how you get them, just that you get them.

I went back and averaged out the last three games, of the 2010 season, for the top quarterbacks in the league, excluding any single digit performances due to players possibly being pulled in week 17, and only Michael Vick (26.3 ppg) and Aaron Rodgers (24.3 ppg) averaged more points per game then Tim Tebow (23.6 ppg).

Tim Tebow racked up the stats last year by running the ball very effectively, just as he did at Florida.

Look for people to be taking Tebow in the sixth and seventh rounds.

Steve Breaston

4 of 5

2.  I had Steve Breaston poised for a breakout season in 2010.  However, the horrible quarterback situation caused the whole Arizona Cardinal team to struggle offensively.

Breaston is a free agent this year and is getting serious consideration from the San Diego Chargers.  Now I don’t have to tell you that Phillip Rivers does not care who is out there catching passes. He will get it to them.

You can go back to 2008 to see what Mr. Breaston is capable of, when he has a legitimate quarterback throwing to him.  With Kurt Warner as quarterback in 2008, Breaston had his first 1000 yard season as the number three receiver!

As the number two receiver in San Diego, or the number two receiver in Arizona, with a quality quarterback like a Kevin Kolb, look for 2011 to be a break out year for Breaston.

Josh Freeman

5 of 5

1.  Now, Josh Freeman is not much of a secret to any of us.  He had a great year finishing seventh among fantasy quarterbacks.

The reason he is on this list is because still nobody is talking about him.  Everyone is talking about Vick, Rodgers, Manning, Brees, Brady and Rivers.  Still, there is more talk about Matt Schaub and Ben Roethlisberger

If you are just like I am and wait until sometime around the seventh round to draft a quarterback that will be almost as good as the top QB’s then Josh Freeman is your guy.
