MLB Trade Rumors: Cincinnati Reds' Edinson Volquez on the Market

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports tweeted yesterday that the Cincinnati Reds are currently shopping right-handed starting pitcher Edinson Volquez and that multiple teams are expressing their interest for the 28-year-old.

Volquez is presently in Louisville playing through his second stint this year in Triple-A. He is 5-4 in the big leagues this season, compiling a 5.93 ERA while allowing 55 BB and 15 home runs in 85 innings pitched.

Consistency has been the poison of Volquez's hazy future with Cincinnati. The Dominican surely hasn't been the same since his 2008 All-Star year and, most importantly, his 2009 Tommy John surgery.

He is 9-7 with 90 walks in 147.2 innings in this time—that's close to six per nine innings pitched, showing his struggles to get the ball over the plate.

Volquez undoubtedly still has some good stuff on the mound, as he's shown signs of excellence throughout five quality starts in 2011. But he's also produced plenty of headaches for Reds fans and has only gotten through the seventh inning once in 16 starts.

Cincinnati owes him $1.625 million this season and he still has two more arbitration-eligible years before becoming a free agent. Volquez declined a four-year contract offer (much like Johnny Cueto's) in February.

He probably should have taken it, but hey, maybe he just needs a different setting; a fresh start.

Although no names have officially been released, ESPN's Jason Churchill speculated that the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers could vie for Volquez.

The trade deadline ends on July 31 at 4:00 P.M. ET.
