The Virginia Cavaliers are the No. 1 overall seed but struggled to close out UC Irvine after dominating for much of the tournament. They enter Omaha as the favorite, but will be up against elite competition facing off against teams like Florida, Texas and North Carolina.
The games kick off in Omaha on June 18th at 2:00 P.M. when North Carolina takes on Vanderbilt on ESPN.
There is an interesting backdrop to the UNC-Vandy matchup, as North Carolina's catcher, Jacob Stallings, is the son of Vanderbilt's head basketball coach, Kevin Stallings. According to The Tennessean, the elder Stallings has opted to place his support behind the Tar Heels in this matchup,
"Hopefully, one of those teams will get out of that bracket, and obviously that's who I will be for. The difference I have from most people is I have two teams to root for -- my two favorite teams. But I hope people understand my favorite team is the one my son plays for.
"
The second matchup in Omaha is likely the most intriguing matchup of the opening round when the Florida Gators meet the Texas Longhorns on June 18th at 7:00 P.M. on ESPN. The Gators and Longhorns will likely feature a premier pitching duel, assuming that the Gators send out Hudson Randall and the Longhorns opt for Taylor Jungmann in the opening matchup.
The College World Series is set to continue on June 19th at 2:00 P.M. on ESPN as the No. 1 ranked Virginia Cavaliers take the underdog California Golden Bears. Virginia appeared to be on cruise control and brought themselves one out away from being eliminated before rallying to defeat UC Irvine in the bottom of the ninth inning.
California has been the surprise of the tournament, their baseball program had to be bailed out by the boosters prior to the season and no one expected them to advance to the Super Regionals. They knocked off Rice in the the Regional and easily defeated Dallas Baptist in the Super Regionals. They now find themselves facing off against the No. 1 team in the country and will be looking to win their first championship since 1957.
The final opening-round matchup in Omaha will feature the Texas A&M Aggies and the South Carolina Gamecocks on June 19th at 7:00 P.M. on ESPN2. Texas A&M upset Florida State in their Super Regional matchup and will appear in Omaha for the first time since 1999. The Aggies scored six runs in the first inning of their third game against FSU, which sent FSU starter Hunter Scantling to the bench without recording a single out.
The Gamecocks head back to Omaha as the defending champions after sweeping Connecticut in the Super Regionals. South Carolina is expected to start their star pitcher Michael Roth in their opening matchup of the College World Series. Roth went 13-3 on the season and had a stunning 1.08 ERA in 123 innings of action.
The winner of the Vanderbilt-North Carolina game will face off against the winner of the Texas-Florida matchup on June 20th at 7:00 P.M. on ESPN2, while the losers will face off on June 20th at 2:00 P.M. on ESPN.
The winner of the Virginia-California matchup will face the winner of the South Carolina-Texas A&M game on June 21st at 7:00 P.M on ESPN, while the losers will battle in an elimination game on June 21st at 2:00 P.M. on ESPN.
The Championship Series is set to begin on June 27th at 8:00 P.M., with Game 2 set for June 28th at 8:00 P.M., and game three set for June 29th at 8:00 P.M., all three games will appear on ESPN.
