2012 NFL Draft: An Early Look at Andrew Luck and the Top 5 at Each Position

Matt MillerMay 20, 2011

For some of us, the NFL draft is never over. We flow from April-to-April, always looking ahead to the next year.

May, June and July are great months to evaluate both incoming rookies and the next year's draft class.

Over at New Era Scouting, we are already started ranking out top 125 players for 2012. Here's a peek at the five best players at each position.

Quarterbacks

1 of 10
MIAMI, FL - JANUARY 03: Orange Bowl MVP Andrew Luck #12 of the Stanford Cardinal celebrates with his teammates after Stanford won 40-12 against the Virginia Tech Hokies during the 2011 Discover Orange Bowl at Sun Life Stadium on January 3, 2011 in Miami,

The 2012 quarterback class will be a good one, with as many as three players carrying a possible top five grade in the preseason.

Stanford's Andrew Luck will get the most attention, and rightfully so, but do not sleep on Landry Jones and Matt Barkley as worthy number twos.

The 2012 running back class features no Heisman Trophy winners (yet) who carried the cache of Mark Ingram in 2011's draft.

Instead, the 2012 class is solid throughout. Ingram's partner in crime at Alabama, Trent Richardson, leads the way.

Only one fullback made our list of the top 125 players, but there are four more we are watching closely as we make our top 250 rankings for later this summer.

Texas' Cody Johnson leads this pack of do-it-all fullbacks.

The 2012 wide receiver class could be similar to the 2011 draft in that two players may very well be drafted in the top 10 picks.

Alshon Jeffrey and Justin Blackmon will battle it out over the season to see who has earned the right to be the first wide receiver off the board and potentially the No. 2 pick overall.

Missouri's Michael Egnew currently ranks as our No. 1 tight end, but he's being pushed by Oregon's David Paulson and George Bryan of North Carolina State.

This three-way battle will be fun to watch during the 2011 season.

The 2012 offensive line crop may not feature six tackles drafted in the first round, but it just might feature five.

The guard class is also very, very strong. Kelechi Osemele looks like a future starter at guard or tackle in the NFL.

The 2012 draft class features two players ranked in the top five, with two others who have the potential to move into that same area.

There is no Ndamukong Suh here, but Quinton Coples at defensive end ranks as one the best pure defensive ends we have seen in quite some time.

The group is made up of true defensive ends, potential outside linebackers and one big-body (Jared Crick) who would fit in a 3-4 defensive line.

The 2012 linebacker class is headlined by Arizona State's Vontaze Burfict—who receives the highest ranking we've assigned to an inside linebacker since Patrick Willis.

The outside linebacker class is weaker than in years past and does not feature a "big name" talent.

Oregon's Cliff Harris will battle it out with Alabama cornerback 'Dre Kirkpatrick for the No. 1 cornerback position this season—with both players expected to be drafted within the top 10 picks of the 2012 draft.

This year's cornerback crop is talented, with up to 10 players carrying a top 100 grade so far.

The 2012 safety class is very similar to the 2011 class. Much like last year, we do not expect to see a safety drafted in the first round and maybe no more than one or two selected in the first two rounds.
