New York Yankees: Jorge Posada Still Has Value, Haters Crawl Back Under Rocks

Rick WeinerJun 13, 2011

Everyone remembers what transpired a month ago on May 14th, so there is no reason to rehash it.

Jorge Posada, Laura Posada, Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman all screwed up.

Derek Jeter did the right thing as Posada's teammate and friend, but those who bashed Posada attacked the captain as well.

Those of us who defended Posada were labeled either insane, foolish or worse.

Our manhood was questioned by some.

Some determined that we were people who had never played a team sport and didn't understand what Jorge's actions, or rather inaction, did to the "chemistry" of his team, to the "sanctity" of his clubhouse.

"Some", of course, are those who were quick to judge.

Those of you who screamed from the rooftop decks in Manhattan, who fumed sitting in traffic on the Cross Bronx Expressway, who flooded sports talk radio demanding that Jorge Posada be cut immediately.

You guys (and gals).

Since you all "put the screws" to Posada almost 28 days ago, Jorge hasn't done much.

He has only lead the Yankees in on-base percentage (.413), and is essentially tied for the lead in batting average (.345) with Alex Rodriguez (.347).

I know what you're going to say. "Rick, batting average is overrated, it doesn't mean anything."

Well, excuse me then. Obviously, you are correct. How silly of me to think that it mattered.

I mean, Major League Baseball only started anointing people "batting champion" in 1901, so obviously, it's a meaningless statistic.

Obviously.

Jorge Posada is in the twilight of his career, this is an indisputable fact.

But Jorge Posada is not done.

Not by a long shot.
