2011 NFL Draft: Updating Offseason Needs for Every NFL Team

Matt MillerJun 3, 2018

Here we sit, six weeks from the 2011 NFL Draft, with complete uncertainty.

Will there be a 2011 NFL season? How about free agency? It appears there will be free agency at some point, but no one knows when.

With complete labor unrest in the NFL right now, no one knows if and when NFL teams will be able to fill their rosters from the almost 500 free agents currently waiting to be signed.

One thing we know for sure is that there will be an NFL Draft this spring—thank God.

Looking ahead to the draft, we break down the team needs for every NFL team position by position.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills enter an offseason with needs at almost every position. In fact, with the third overall pick, the Bills can truly draft the best available player, regardless of position—other than special teams; the Bills are actually pretty solid at kicker and punter.

Buffalo would love to focus on improving their offensive tackle group, but no player warrants a top three selection.

Does this open Buffalo up to trading opportunities? You betcha, it does.

The Bills are also likely to look long and hard at Texas A&M outside linebacker Von Miller and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson.

Both players would offer immediate upgrades to a defense that has been laughable.

Needs

1. Left Tackle

2. Outside Linebacker (3-4 defense)

3. Defensive End (3-4 defense)

4. Wide Receiver

5. Quarterback

6. Tight End

7. Right Tackle

8. Defensive Tackle (3-4 defense)

9. Inside Linebacker

10. Cornerback

Miami Dolphins

Miami enters the offseason needing to replace their top two running backs (Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams), decide if Chad Henne is their long-term answer at quarterback and also add targets at tight end and wide receiver for whomever the starting quarterback is next fall.

Oh—and they traded their second-round pick away for Brandon Marshall, so they are short on draft picks.

Miami will be in a great position with pick No. 16 to grab the top running back on their board. They figure to be big players for Mark Ingram (Alabama) with the first-round selection.

The Dolphins have Pro Bowlers at left and right tackle, but a complete mess everywhere between those two on the offensive line.

It would not be a sexy pick to draft a guard or center in the first round, but they may have to consider it.

Needs

1. Running Back

2. Tight End

3. Quarterback

4. Free Safety

5. Wide Receiver

6. Left Guard

7. Center

8. Cornerback

New England Patriots

How is it fair that the reigning AFC East champions, who had 14 wins in 2010, hold three of the top 33 picks in the 2011 NFL Draft? Taking that one step further, the Patriots have two draft picks in each of the first three rounds.

With their plethora of stockpiled draft picks, the Patriots will be tempted to trade for future picks—something they do better than any other team. They can also sit back and pluck the best players off the board at a staggering rate.

New England has more needs than their 14-2 record would indicate. They must add speed at outside linebacker and answer question marks on the offensive line, where the starting left side of the line consists of two free agents.

We love Danny Woodhead and BenJarvus Green-Ellis, but neither is a long-term answer at running back and the Patriots could easily use one of their first six picks on an every-down back.

Needs

1. Outside Linebacker (3-4 defense)

2. Running Back

3. Wide Receiver

4. Offensive Tackle

5. Defensive End (3-4 defense)

6. Offensive Guard

7. Cornerback

8. Nose Tackle (3-4 defense)

If you listen to Jets head coach Rex Ryan, the team will be playing in the Super Bowl next year. So, how do they get there?

Mark Sanchez keeps improving at quarterback and is good enough to take the team to the big game, but three of his top receivers are free agents and another (Jerricho Cotchery) is likely to be released as a salary cap casualty.

The team also cut right tackle Damien Woody, opening up a hole on an already-shaky right side of the offensive line.

On defense, they have no one who can rush the passer and a three-man front that needs to be entirely refurbished.

The Jets are good, but boy do they have a lot of holes to fill.

2. Defensive End (3-4 defense)

The Texans hired Wade Phillips to bring his 3-4 defense to town and hopefully push the talented team into the playoffs.

To win in 2011, the Texans must start adding personnel to fit the 3-4 system as soon as possible.

Houston is lucky, as this draft is deep on players who will fit in a 3-4 scheme.

Unluckily, they have a need at both free and strong safety, and this draft is pretty weak at both spots.

Without free agency to re-stock the roster, Houston will be drafting defense early and often.

The Texans will look at outside linebacker and cornerback in Round 1, and they can hope and pray that Prince Amukamara (CB, Nebraska) is still on the board for them. At outside linebacker they have Connor Barwin and....yep, no one.

If we can make one critical statement about the Colts and general manager Bill Polian, it is that he has all but ignored getting big bodies who can push the pile when the game is on the line.

For all the finesse in the Colts locker room, where's the beef?

The 2011 draft class in Indianapolis should be devoid of wide receivers, running backs and cornerbacks.

It is time to add tough guys at offensive tackle, guard and defensive tackle—and then they need to go back and add more in the later rounds.

There is a strong belief that the Colts should draft a quarterback in the middle-rounds of the draft to eventually take over for Peyton Manning.

For a team who almost won their division last year, the Jaguars have their fair share of needs to address this offseason.

The team needs to improve a secondary that was atrocious in 2010, move to improve at linebacker and find a quarterback of the future to learn behind David Garrard.

More than anything, the Jaguars must get better at cornerback and safety. The team put players on the field last fall that are not NFL-level starters.

Aaron Kampman is expected back in 2011 and the team did draft Austen Lane and Larry Hart last year, but the pass rush is nothing great.

Needs

1. Cornerback

2. Free Safety

3. Defensive End

4. Strong Safety

5. Wide Receiver

6. Quarterback

7. Outside Linebacker

The Titans entire offseason must be focused around finding a starting quarterback—and a backup quarterback.

The roster right now is empty at the position. Tennessee plans to add a veteran—maybe even re-signing Kerry Collins—and draft a future quarterback early on in the draft.

With the No. 8 overall selection in Round 1, the Titans have a good shot at either Cam Newton (Auburn) or Blaine Gabbert (Missouri).

If either player is on the board, the Titans will have an easy decision to make.

The Ravens offensive line became a concern as the season went on last year and it figures to be their chief area of focus in the 2011 offseason.

There are talks that Michael Oher could be moved back to right tackle—where he excelled as a rookie—and there's potential of drafting a left tackle in Round 1.

This makes great sense with a draft class that is very heavy on talent at offensive tackle.

Of course, there is a chance that they try to add players at wide receiver, as they have one of the slowest wide receiver crews in the league.

On defense, the Ravens are strong, but they could benefit from adding depth at cornerback and defensive end.

Will Carson Palmer play in Cincinnati, be traded or retire? The Bengals offseason all hinges on that one decision.

With the No. 4 overall pick, the Bengals can fill one of many holes on the roster, including the potential need at quarterback.

Cincinnati says they will not trade Palmer, but Bengals owner Mike Brown is an unpredictable man.

The team also has massive needs at defensive end, running back and wide receiver.

If running back Cedric Benson is not re-signed, the team could use a second-round pick to find his replacement.

Wide receivers Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens should not be back in 2011, making the need for a big-body wide receiver more prominent.

The Browns are hedging their bets on quarterback Colt McCoy being their long-term answer at quarterback. Their 2011 draft should focus on adding targets for him at wide receiver.

In addition to the needs on offense, the Browns are transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense. The Browns are very thin on the defensive line and have no one on the roster who can rush the passer.

The Browns could realistically sit back and draft the best wide receiver, defensive end, defensive tackle or cornerback on the board with the No. 6 overall pick.

Super Bowl teams rarely have many holes to fill the following offseason, which is true for the Pittsburgh Steelers this year.

The team could use upgrades along the offensive line and at cornerback, but their 2011 Opening Day starting lineup should not look that different from the team they put on the field in the Super Bowl.

Ike Taylor is the team's best cornerback and is also a free agent this summer. If he is not re-signed, cornerback becomes the most important need for the Steelers to fill.

If Taylor is brought back, there remains a need to add depth and speed at the position.

The offensive line has been an issue for years now. The Steelers hit on center Maurkice Pouncey in the first round last year and need to do the same in 2011 with at least one guard and one tackle.

The Broncos enter the offseason with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and many needs to fill, especially on defense.

The team is moving to a 4-3 alignment under new head coach John Fox and must use as many draft choices as possible to add players who can perform in this new scheme.

With only six total picks in the draft, Denver must get creative. Do not rule out the possibility that they would trade the No. 2 pick.

Future Hall-of-Famer Champ Bailey is back for two more seasons at cornerback, but there is still a need at the position.

Should Denver keep their first-round pick, they should have their choice of top cornerback Patrick Peterson (LSU) or one of the elite defensive tackles (Marcel Dareus, Nick Fairley) available at the top of the draft.

The Chiefs surprised everyone by winning the AFC East in 2010. Now they are ready to take the next step and win a playoff game.

Kansas City has a young roster loaded with fast, exciting players on both sides of the ball. Where they are lacking, however, is along the front seven on defense and the offensive line.

Tamba Hali, a Pro Bowler in 2010, was given the franchise tag and will return in 2011. The Chiefs need to find a pass rusher to line up opposite Hali early in this draft class.

There are also needs at right tackle and wide receiver that must be addressed within the Chiefs' top picks.

Needs

1. Outside Linebacker (3-4 defense)

2. Wide Receiver

3. Right Tackle

After an inspiring 8-8 campaign in 2010, the Raiders fired coach Tom Cable—proving that Al Davis is still crazy.

Oakland has pieces on the roster to make a playoff push in a weak AFC West, but they also let their best player, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, walk in free agency.

Also leaving will be guard Robert Gallery, who was an above-average player on an offensive line that is simply not that good.

Jason Campbell will be given the ball as the team's starting quarterback this fall. The Raiders fate rests entirely in his hands.

With no first-round pick due to a trade for Richard Seymour, Oakland is facing a difficult offseason.

Despite their record in 2010, the Chargers have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, which makes their predictably slow start every season more puzzling.

With five picks in the first 96 picks, the Chargers can reload at their thin spots or use their extra picks as trade bait to secure more picks next year.

San Diego's 3-4 defense is only as good as the pressure they can place on the quarterback. The Chargers' focus for 2011 will be adding pass rushers, as well as looking to get better at inside linebacker and defensive end.

The Chargers could look to add a running back to roll out with Ryan Mathews and a receiver to replace Vincent Jackson if he leaves in free agency.

The Cowboys 2010 season can be written off as a complete and utter failure. How can they rebound in 2011?

A healthy Tony Romo will be a big step in the right direction, but there are needs here that must be met through the draft.

Dallas really has few holes to fill. With many young players on the roster, the Cowboys are in good shape for the 2011 season.

Looking at areas of weakness, you immediately focus on the offensive line and secondary. Dallas could use a new right tackle, two new safeties and an upgrade at cornerback if Terence Newman is released.

Dallas could also look to add depth at defensive end.

If free agents Doug Free and Kyle Kosier are not re-signed, the Cowboys can officially panic.

Kosier can be replaced, but Free is Dallas' best offensive tackle and a young player they can build around.

The Giants' offseason will be dictated by running back Ahmad Bradshaw's 2011 status with the team.

If Bradshaw leaves, the Giants will need to move immediately to replace him.

New York also has issues along the offensive line.

In 2010, they attempted to plug in free agents and backups with no success.

The Giants are expected to focus on adding a left tackle in the first two rounds of the 2011 draft.

Tight end Kevin Boss has not been amazing at the position, but he is a good player and would hurt the team if he chooses to leave in free agency.

On defense, the Giants look good on the defensive line and at safety.

Cornerback and linebacker are serviceable and upgrades could be made.

If a top linebacker were to fall to New York in Round 1 or 2, they would have to consider making a move to secure him.

Martez Wilson of Illinois is an intriguing player for New York to look at in Round 2.

The Eagles biggest need this offseason is signing quarterback Michael Vick to a long-term extension after placing the franchise tag on him.

Since no new contracts can be signed until the CBA situation is resolved, the Eagles will instead focus on improving a defense that really underperformed in 2010.

Cornerback will be the Eagles' No. 1 priority, and we have heard rumblings that Nnamdi Asomugha is a possibility in free agency.

Asante Samuel has one side of the field locked down. Finding a player to line up opposite him is key. Colorado's Jimmy Smith is a great fit for the Eagles defense.

Philadelphia also needs to sign safety Quintin Mikell as soon as a new CBA is signed. Losing him would be devastating.

The easier question might be, "What do the Redskins NOT need?"

Washington faces an offseason where they must add a quarterback, running back, wide receivers, offensive linemen and reload the defensive line and at cornerback.

Oh, and they only have six draft picks to do this with if there is no free agency. Good times.

Washington may target a quarterback with the No. 11 overall pick should one of the top passers become available.

They would also be wise to shop the pick in an attempt to add more draft choices.

The Falcons were an early favorite to play in the Super Bowl last year after an impressive regular season run.

In quarterback Matt Ryan, the Falcons have their clear-cut leader for the next decade. Now is the time to add the talent around him to win a ring.

General Manager Thomas Dimitroff has made it clear the team plans to add speed on defense, particularly in the form of a pass rusher.

Defensive end John Abraham had a brilliant 2010 season, but his career is on the downturn.

As much as we like Kory Bierrmann, he looks more like a situational pass rusher at this point. Finding a legitimate No. 1 defensive end is a priority in Atlanta.

There are also needs at outside linebacker opposite Sean Weatherspoon, a No. 2 receiver to play beside Roddy White and depth on the offensive line.

Atlanta could also use a draft pick to find a tight end they can groom to replace Tony Gonzalez after next year.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson fielded what amounted to a minor league team during the 2010 season and was rewarded with a 2-14 record, the first overall pick in the draft and a new coaching staff.

New head coach Ron Rivera has a big task in front of him in trying to turn the Panthers in to winners.

He will undoubtedly start by finding a quarterback and then repairing the many holes on defense.

Don't rule out Patrick Peterson as a candidate for Carolina at No. 1 overall.

With the future of Chris Gamble and Richard Marshall remaining uncertain, Peterson could be a surprise first pick.

Making the situation even more bleak, Carolina traded the 33rd pick in the draft to New England for the chance to draft Armanti Edwards last year.

Edwards played in only three games and recorded zero catches in 2010.

The Saints Super-Bowl hangover ended with an embarrassing loss to the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the playoffs.

However hard it is to imagine, this loss was a good thing for New Orleans.

The Saints are now awake and alert to what their needs are and where to get better.

The Saints tendered many players with restricted free-agent tags this offseason in an attempt to hold on to many key players.

If those tags hold up under a new CBA, the Saints will be in great shape to contend for another title in 2011.

New Orleans was able to sign defensive tackle Shaun Rogers and will look to add at least one speed rusher at defensive end through the draft.

Many people have projected the Saints will draft an outside linebacker in their mock drafts, but we feel they will hold tight with the young players on their roster.

Adding a running back to replace Reggie Bush will be key, as he is likely to be released.

The Buccaneers surprised us all with a 10-6 record last season.

Behind the strong play of youngsters Josh Freeman and LaGarrette Blount and Mike Williams, the Bucs have a solid offense in the making.

On defense, things are less solidified.

Barrett Ruud could leave via free agency and safety Tashard Jackson has been suspended by the NFL. Defensive ends Tim Crowder and Stylez White are not able to generate a pass rush and could be expendable.

Lost in the Jay Cutler injury drama after the NFC Championship Game was the simple fact that the Chicago Bears made it to the NFC Championship Game with a shoddy offensive line and no real threats at receiver.

The Bears may experience a set back in 2011, but this is a talented roster with the right players to build around.

A successful draft this year could spring them in to a run of dominance.

Chicago must first surround Cutler with the offensive line and receivers he deserves.

No quarterback can throw touchdowns from his rear end. Drafting a left tackle and wide receiver in the first two rounds should be a no-brainer.

The Bears decision to cut defensive tackle Tommie Harris should not have been surprising to those watching the team this fall.

Replacing Harris will be a key draft priority.

The Lions at least seem to be getting closer to respectability, but there remain holes on this roster that they must address through the 2011 NFL Draft.

Left tackle Jeff Backus turns 34 this year and the team has no young prospect to take over for him.

Right tackle is equally messy.

The Lions could also use an upgrade at center and a power running back to combine with Jahvid Best. A secondary wide receiver would be a nice addition too.

On defense, the Lions need a shutdown corner for their Cover 2 scheme, as well as upgrades at both outside linebacker positions.

The Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers have a roster loaded with young talent.

Even better, they will bring back injured stars Ryan Grant and Jermichael Finley in 2011.

Green Bay has very few pressing needs to address this offseason. Most importantly was the re-signing of their own players.

Defensive ends Cullen Jenkins and Johnny Jolly are both likely to leave the team this summer.

Mike Neal was drafted in 2010 to take over at one spot, but there is a need for another defensive end on the roster.

The Packers would also like an upgrade opposite Clay Matthews at outside linebacker and a potential replacement for Charles Woodson at cornerback.

On offense, the Packers are loaded. It looks like left guard Daryn Colledge will explore his options in free agency and could leave.

There is also a chance they will need to replace wide receiver James Jones if he leaves for a big-money deal.

Other than that, the offense will remain intact.

Needs

1. Defensive End (3-4 defense)

2. Outside Linebacker (3-4 defense)

3. Running Back

4. Left Guard

5. Offensive Tackle

6. Wide Receiver

7. Quarterback

The Minnesota Vikings have one focus this offseason: find their quarterback of the future.

Gone is Brett Favre.

In his place, the Vikings currently have Joe Webb, a developmental player who was drafted to play wide receiver before moving back to his college position of quarterback.

Minnesota must also make improvements at cornerback and outside linebacker, as well as considering replacements for wide receiver Sidney Rice and defensive tackle Pat Williams, if they choose to leave and/or retire.

Minnesota is in a good position with a full set of picks and clearly defined needs.

Needs

1. Quarterback

2. Cornerback

3. Outside Linebacker

4. Defensive End

Like most teams in the NFC West this offseason, the Cardinals enter 2011 with a huge need at quarterback.

Players like Max Hall and John Skelton were trotted out under center during the 2010 season with predictably limited results.

With the No. 5 overall pick, the Cardinals will have their choice of the top quarterbacks in this draft.

Other than quarterback, the Cardinals need to get better at outside linebacker, left tackle and left guard.

They would also like to see improvements at right tackle and cornerback.

Needs

1. Quarterback

2. Left Tackle

3. Outside Linebacker

4. Left Guard

5. Right Tackle

6. Cornerback

7. Free Safety

San Francisco 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO - DECEMBER 12: Vernon Davis #85 of the San Francisco 49ers celebrates with Alex Smith #11 after a catching a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks during an NFL game at Candlestick Park on December 12, 2010 in San Francisco, California.

The 49ers currently have one quarterback on their roster: David Carr.

That is how good the outlook is at the position for 2011.

Finding a quarterback is goal number one for the 49ers, but that does not mean using their first overall pick on the position.

Many—myself included—like the options in Round 2 better for the 49ers West Coast offense.

Allow us to publicly plead here for Andy Dalton of TCU or FSU's Christian Ponder.

In the first round, San Francisco would love to find Von Miller (OLB, Texas A&M) or Patrick Peterson (CB, LSU) on the board. Both players would be an immediate upgrade at key positions of need.

Who else was shocked when Seattle made the playoffs and then actually won a game? Umm, we were.

Seattle may have snuck in the playoffs with a losing record, but don't let that fool you about their long-term roster health.

This is a team with many holes at key positions.

Much of Seattle's future is based on how well quarterback Charlie Whitehurst can play, and if he is indeed the Seahawks' plan at quarterback for the future.

If Whitehurst is not the guy, they should consider drafting a quarterback at the end of Round 1.

Right tackle Sean Locklear is a free agent and unlikely to return; replacing him will be a chief concern.

Seattle also needs to look for upgrades at strong safety and find a speed rusher at defensive end.

Needs

1. Right Tackle

2. Cornerback

3. Strong Safety

4. Defensive End

5. Wide Receiver

6. Quarterback

St. Louis hit on their first and second-round picks from the 2010 NFL Draft with quarterback Sam Bradford and left tackle Rodger Saffold.

Now, they must surround Bradford with talented receivers and a threat at tight end.

The Rams made a surprising move by cutting free safety O.J. Atogwe in February; replacing him will be among their first moves this offseason.

St. Louis would also love to add a defensive end opposite Chris Long who can provide a speed rush and really pressure the quarterback.

Needs

1. Defensive End

2. Wide Receiver

3. Free Safety

4. Defensive Tackle

5. Tight End

6. Outside Linebacker

7. Strong Safety
