NFL Draft 2011: Odds Cam Newton Lands with Every Team in the Top 10

Jun 1, 2018

Cam Newton played one season at Auburn University, but with all the hype around him, you’d think he was already pro.

He won the BCS championship and the Heisman Trophy before capturing everyone’s collective hearts at his personal workout, the scouting combine and at Auburn's recent pro day.

Newton may be a physical specimen, but his attitude and other problems that have followed him may be enough to scare teams away.

He is the ultimate boom-or-bust pick, but knowing the NFL, one team will take a chance with an early pick to see if they can capture lightning in a bottle.

10. Washington Redskins

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 50 percent

The Washington Redskins are in a rebuilding phase, and it seems veteran Donovan McNabb will be on his way out this season.

Coach Mike Shanahan has made it clear that he wants to bring in his own offensive style, which will mean he wants to groom his own quarterback.

Shanahan would definitely take a chance on Cam Newton if he drops down to the 10th spot. Odds are he won’t drop that far, though.

9. Dallas Cowboys

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 1 percent

The Cowboys have Tony Romo and will not be looking to add any more quarterbacks, no matter how much Jerry Jones loves glitzy players.

They have too many problems on defense to take a risk on Cam Newton.

8. Tennessee Titans

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 40 percent

With the departure of former head coach Jeff Fisher and the soon-to-be departure of Vince Young, a new quarterback in town is a foregone conclusion.

The Tennessee Titans are in a transitional period, and a new player like Cam Newton would be a good spark for the franchise.

If he is there at the eighth pick, the Titans will take him.

7. San Francisco 49ers

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 30 percent

With a new coach in Jim Harbaugh, the San Francisco 49ers are going to be moving in a different direction than the one they had been moving in with former coach Mike Singletary.

Although I believe if Newton’s there at the seventh spot, Harbaugh will consider taking him, I think he will be waiting for next season to go after Andrew Luck.

Whether he would actually pull the trigger on Newton would be a different story all in itself.

6. Cleveland Browns

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 10 percent

With Browns General Manager Mike Holmgren at the helm, it seems like Colt McCoy is the Browns' quarterback of the future.

McCoy is a solid quarterback, but I don’t know if I agree that he is the future of the team.

Holmgren is a master of working with quarterbacks, and if he does see Newton at the sixth spot, he may take him to move him later.

5. Arizona Cardinals

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 60 percent

At Auburn’s pro day, Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt was studying the moves of Cam Newton closely.

I’m sure he was scouting Newton’s teammate Nick Fairley as well, but he had his eye on Newton.

There will be major consideration to take Newton if he falls to the Cardinals, because they need a quarterback almost more than any other team in the NFL.

Larry Fitzgerald needs someone to throw the ball to him.

4. Cincinnati Bengals

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 70 percent

I think this pick hinges on whether the Cincinnati Bengals can convince veteran Carson Palmer to come back.

If the Bengals do move Palmer or he retires, they will most definitely take a chance on Cam Newton.

Head Coach Marvin Lewis could shape Newton into his style of quarterback and try to turn the program in Cincinnati around.

3. Buffalo Bills

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 5 percent

The Buffalo Bills organization was the only team in the top five of the 2011 NFL draft that wasn’t heavily represented at the Cam Newton workouts.

The Bills are a conservative organization, and there is too much surrounding Cam Newton that scares them.

The Bills will almost certainly be addressing the defensive side of the ball.

2. Denver Broncos

9 of 10
GLENDALE, AZ - DECEMBER 12: Quarterback Kyle Orton #8 of the Denver Broncos drops back to pass during the NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals at the University of Phoenix Stadium on December 12, 2010 in Glendale, Arizona. The Cardinals defeated the B

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 10 percent

While it appears Kyle Orton will be leaving the Denver Broncos, the team still has Tim Tebow, and their new coach, John Fox, may be able to talk Orton back.

While Newton will be intriguing at this pick, I think Fox would pick Blaine Gabbert over Newton.

I don’t believe Fox will go offense at all and will go for a defensive lineman.

1. Carolina Panthers

Odds they pick Cam Newton: 25 percent

The Carolina Panthers and new head coach Ron Rivera have a lot of work to do turning a flailing franchise around.

John Fox didn’t do a terrible job, but Rivera will have a clean slate to work with and taking Cam Newton will be very intriguing to him.

Rivera wouldn’t be judged for moving Jimmy Clausen, and he may want to start fresh. I don’t know whether Newton would fit the team, but he is the kind of player the Panthers could make their main guy.
