NFL Trade Speculation: Why Kevin Kolb Isn't Worth the Eagles' Asking Price
With the NFL’s collective bargaining issues threatening a lockout this season, it seems all hope of trading Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Kevin Kolb before the 2011 NFL Draft are gone.
The Eagles would have gotten a high pick in the draft in return for the services of Kevin Kolb from a team in dire need of a quarterback.
That would be great for the Eagles organization, but not acquiring Kolb might not be terrible for the teams in need of a new man at the helm.
Enjoy the show!
Built to Play the West Coast Style Offense
1 of 5
When an organization brings a rookie into their team, they want to shape that player into the perfect fit for their systems.
Kolb is no different.
Andy Reid has taught Kevin Kolb his system and has drilled it into his head. Kolb would have to re-learn all of the terminology and plays, and that is something he hasn’t had to do before.
A team that runs a West Coast offense like the Eagles, though, would definitely look to Kolb as their starter.
Interceptions vs. Touchdowns
2 of 5
In the rare appearances on the field for Kevin Kolb, he hasn’t been spectacular.
While only appearing in 20 games in his first four seasons in the NFL, Kolb has thrown just 194 completions and just over 2,000 yards. That’s an average of just over 100 yards passing per game.
That’s not good.
Kolb also has a career touchdown-interception ratio of 11-to-14.
For all the hype over this kid, he sure hasn’t shown much in his opportunities to start for the Eagles.
Lack of Experience
3 of 5
Kevin Kolb’s experience in the NFL hasn’t been the greatest.
When Donovan McNabb was here, he seemed to be cold to Kevin Kolb. Kolb only got to go into games that McNabb was pulled out of or was injured in.
Even when Kolb got the starts for the Eagles, the offensive line was terrible and he got destroyed (by Clay Matthews).
Whoever does decide to bring him in will get a player that has little on field experience of any real relevance.
Deep Draft at Quarterback
4 of 5
This season saw a ton of turnover at the head coaching position in the NFL.
With all the new blood, instead of trying to teach an old dog new tricks, teams may choose to start fresh with a raw rookie.
The 2011 NFL Draft is one of the deepest at quarterback with 10 that could be possible starters in the NFL.
Teams could go after Blaine Gabbert, Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, Andy Dalton, Christian Ponder, Ricky Stanzi, Colin Kaepernick, Pat Devlin or Nathan Enderle and have a suitable quarterback for the future.
Teams could use their higher picks for other positions of need and get one of the talented quarterbacks later in the draft.
Eagles Want Too Much
5 of 5
The Eagles are a smart organization and they know how to turn something into a positive for the future.
With the success of Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, the possibilities of what Kevin Kolb could be are through the roof.
Whether or not the hype comes to fruition or not is to be seen, but you'd better believe the Eagles will make a move for him if the price is right.
The Eagles would be looking for a first-round pick if they could trade at the draft, but once it passes, I don’t know what the asking price is.
