NFL Rumors: Dallas Cowboys May Switch Head Coaches Soon, Big Names on List
Update: 7:15am CDT (Friday 9/24) - While all of these rumors have come from prosportsblogging.com and getting a lot of run on 105.3 FM The Fan in Dallas, now Mike Freeman with CBS Sports tweets, "I want you all to contemplate this possibility: [Bill] Cowher to the [Dallas] Cowboys.
However, Sports Illustrated's Peter King also comments on the rumors, via Twitter, by saying "Re Wade Phillips-fired-after-a-loss-Sunday nonsense: If they won't fire a bad kid kicker, what makes you think they'd fire the coach?"
Update: 11:08pm CDT - There's an update from prosportsblogging.com and now the name being mentioned is none other than former Dallas Cowboys' head coach, and current Fox NFL Sunday analyst, Jimmy Johnson.
Earlier this afternoon, a rumor surfaced out of Dallas that the Cowboys could be on the verge of firing head coach Wade Phillips.
Kevin Lee from prosportsblogging.com was on the air with Gavin Dawson and Gregg Henson with 105.3 FM The Fan in Dallas, Texas and told them that the Dallas Cowboys are on the verge of firing head coach Wade Phillips and team owner Jerry Jones already has a "handshake agreement" in place with this head coach.
Lee gave his sources to both Dawson and Henson off air and when they went on air with him, both on air personalities with the CBS Radio station stated that these sources were very credible. The site also has very credible writers on the site according to Dawson.
Lee told Gavin and Gregg that the two prominent names that are out there are former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher and former Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick. Other names that are apparently on the list are Tony Dungy, Steve Mariucci, and Marty Schottenheimer.
There are fans and media alike that are questioning this rumor, even calling "b.s."
Lee told The Fan that his sources don't have an ax to grind with the Cowboys and have no reason to lie when it comes to this kind of a rumor.
This is not a move that a lot of teams make, especially not after the third game of the year. Is this a smart move for the Cowboys to make right now or is this a move that is a long time in the making?
Say what you want about prosportsblogging.com and that it's not a well known site, but I made my own phone call to someone close to the Cowboys who's had the same information over the last four days.
I've talked to this source before about rumors surrounding the Rangers as well as the Cowboys and he's blown me off and told me there was nothing to it.
This time around, he's done everything but blow this rumor off.
At this point, I don't know whether to take this story seriously but I don't see this rumor dying off until Monday morning comes and goes and Wade Phillips is still the head coach of the Cowboys.
Until then, this is going to be a hot rumor for the next four and a half days.
