2010 NFL Draft: Schottey's Sleepers—Guys To Watch Out for in Draft Day

Michael SchotteyApr 20, 2010

Every year, a rookie or two sneaks onto a roster that he wasn't supposed to, finds playing time that wasn't supposed to be there, and makes an impact he never should have made.

Tom Brady is the poster child for these "sleeper picks," others include: Shannon Sharpe, Brandon Marshall, Elvis Dumervil, Antoine Bethea, Wes Welker, and Michael Turner.

Who are those players going to be in 2010?

Quarterback

Names You Know: Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen

Names You Should Know: Dan LeFevour, John Skelton, Mike Kafka

Schottey Sleeper: Bill Stull (Pittsburgh)

All Bill Stull did his senior year was post a 150.6 QB Rating—11th best in the FBS—while throwing 21 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. He was also named the Big East's first-team quarterback.

He might not get drafted.

After a great Pro Day—that most teams attended to watch Dorin Dickerson, a team could grab the signal caller in the later rounds and try to stash him for a year or two.

In the right situation, Stull could make a lot of noise in the NFL.

Running Back

Names You Know: CJ Spiller, Jahvid Best, Ryan Mathews

Names You Should Know: Ben Tate, Anthony Dixon, Joique Bell

Schottey Sleeper: LaMarcus Coker (Hampton)

It is slightly ironic that this is being written on April 20 (4/20)—Coker was once a talented underclassman running back/returner for the Tennessee Volunteers. Then, things got a little sticky for LaMarcus "Toker."

Fast forward, and a few years later, Coker's career hasn't exactly shined. He went the Randy Moss route and went to Hampton in order to play. He wasn't as dominant as Moss was, but finished first in his conference in rushing and second in all-purpose yards.

He is 5'10", 200 and reportedly blazes 40-yard-dashes under 4.3.

Wide Receiver

Names You Know: Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, Arrelious Benn

Names You Should Know: Jacoby Ford, Taylor Price, Emmanuel Sanders

Schottey Sleeper: Jeremy Willams (Tulane)

With all the talk of which white receiver from Texas is the "next Wes Welker," it could be a young black kid from Texas who went to Louisiana for school.

The talk on Williams is that he's a mid-round pick, perfect for the West Coast Offense. Well, with all the teams running modified versions of that, and the spread offense—which also utilizes crisp underneath routes—Williams will find himself competing for a third receiver spot before anyone thinks he should.

Offensive Line

Names You Know: Russell Okung, Trent Williams, Mike Iupati

Names You Should Know: John Jerry, Ciron Black, Jason Fox

Schottey Sleeper: Sam Young (OT Notre Dame)

A certain writer—this guy—was way too high on Sam Young earlier in the year. I predicted that Young would be the linemen nobody suspects to jump into the late first/early second. That guy turned our to be Rodger Saffold.

So, in the middle to late rounds, someone is going to get a huge reclamation project. Young is pushing 6'9" and has a monstrous frame.

Depending on the situation, Young's career could go one of two ways—either he puts on a ton of weight and moves inside to guard (or right tackle), or he improves his footwork and mobility and becomes a Gaither-like left tackle.

Either way, it should not surprise anyone if he's getting heavy minutes by 2011.

Tight End

Names You Know: Jermaine Gresham, Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez

Names You Should Know: Dorin Dickerson, Jimmy Graham, Nate Bynum

Schottey Sleeper: Colin Peek (Alabama)

6'5", 255 pounds is about as prototypical as a tight end can be without being named Jeremy or Tony. Peek also has solid hands, decent speed, and great blocking.

He is perfectly average.

In today's NFL, most franchises want a duo of Tight Ends who each excel at either blocking or receiving. The days of Jeff King and Kyle Brady are no more. But, if one guy can bring that era back—bet on Peek.

He'll be drafted in the middle rounds and make a team as a third TE. Once he gets snaps, it is only a matter of time before he earns more.

Defensive Line

Names You Know: Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Derrick Morgan

Names You Should Know: Linval Joseph, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, EJ Wilson

Schottey Sleeper: Brandon Deaderick (DT Alabama)

Money on the table, Deaderick will have a better career than his former teammate Terrence Cody. Not many pundits would take that pick. But, scouts? Almost every one.

Deaderick never had the hype of Mt. Cody, but was, arguably, a bigger part of their 2009 success. The kid was shot by a carjacker and still showed up for practice—playing five days after the incident.

A team looking for a 3-4 defensive end will reach for this kid earlier than their fans will approve of, and the team will look like a genius.

Linebacker

Names You Know: Rolando McClain, Sean Weatherspoon, Sergio Kindle

Names You Should Know: Koa Misi, Jason Worilds, Sean Lee

Schottey Sleeper: Jamar Chaney (ILB Mississippi State)

Chaney is a talented linebacker from the SEC—if anyone had heard of him before 2009, or if he'd played for any other SEC school, he'd have a lot more hype going into this weekend.

Chaney is a speedy linebacker who is more of a coverage guy than a pass rusher. That puts him out of a lot of 3-4 teams (unless they think he can bulk up) and many teams won't think he's a fit at MLB for them.

Chaney could help a team as a backup weak-side linebacker but his best fit will be as an MLB on a team running the Tampa Two style defense—Carolina, Minnesota, New York Giants, Tampa Bay, or Chicago as the most notable Tampa teams. Chaney excels in coverage and could crack the starting lineup sooner rather than later.

Defensive Back

Names You Know: Joe Haden, Eric Berry, Kyle Wilson

Names You Should Know: Amari Speivey, Nate Allen, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah

Schottey Sleeper: LeRoy Vann (CB Florida A&M)

The consensus among many is that Vann will never put in heavy minutes as a defensive player in the NFL. Most believe he will be an end of the roster guy whose biggest value is covering kicks.

Vann disagrees.

Vann is also a talented punt and kick returner who is working out for a lot of teams as a wide receiver as well as a cornerback. He can be a poor man's Joshua Cribbs in this league.

He might not even be drafted, but he'll make an impact—as early as this fall.
