As a Patriot fan I have tried to forget about "Patriotgate." I have had to deal with the claim of my team being cheaters, a claim at which I laugh only because getting
Randy Moss for a fourth round pick should qualify as cheating.
One of the penalties handed down upon the Patriots by commisoner Goddell was that if they made the playoffs—which at 9-0 would take a season ending injury to Brady for them to miss it—then New England would lose THEIR first round pick
The reason for me emphasizing the "their" is because at this point and time THEIR pick would be the 32nd overall pick.
But the Patriots made a draft day deal with the
San Francisco 49ers. The Pats dealt away the 28th overall pick in last April's draft for the
49ers fourth round selcetion in the 2007 draft and the 49ers 2008 first round pick.
Well for anyone who has been following San Francisco's season this year the team has gone 2-7 through its first 9 games. Meaning the 49ers are currently tied for the fourth worst record in the
NFL with the
Raiders and sit behind only the
Jets (1-8),
Rams(1-8) and the winless
Dolphins (0-9).
Four of the Niners final seven are against teams with sub-.500 records, however the Rams are the only team of the four with a worse record than the 49ers.
The Niners are averaging a league worst 11.2 ppg this season and are not their healthiest.
Taking all this into account, the New England Patriots may just wind up having a top 5 pick in next spring's draft which could feature such talents as: Dennis Dixon,
Darren McFadden, Tim Tebow, Colt Brennan, Brian Brohm, Glenn Dorsey, Jake Long, Kenny Phillips, Andre Woodson, Dan Connor, DeSean Jackson, Sedrick Ellis,
Matt Ryan, Steve Slaton, Pat White, Keith Rivers, and many more prospects.
Now with the Patriots recent injuries at the running back position and (knocking on wood) that they sign upcoming free agents Asante Samuel, Randy Moss and Donte Stallworth—imagine their already dangerous offense with the addition of Darren McFadden!
Being able to alternate between Maroney and McFadden will frustrate defenses even more. And think about this—in his collegiate carrer McFadden has thrown 4 touchdowns for a total of 102 yards. Watch out Tom Brady!
This fantasy becmong a reality still depends on how the Niners finish their season, and what the management wants to do with the Patriots first round pick.
