Denver Broncos: My Draft Picks, Possibilities

Nick CastilloJan 10, 2010

As I sit here watching the Green Bay Packers being embarrassed against the Arizona Cardinals, I cannot help but continue to think about the next step for my Broncos. There are a lot of things that are going to happen before the 2010 NFL Draft.

Brandon Marshall will probably be gone. Tony Scheffler will probably be out of there too. We will undoubtedly sign some more free agents that are going to raise some eyebrows.

However, there are quite a few areas that the Broncos are going to want to address. This mock draft is going to analyze each of our picks and where we might go with them.

1st round, pick #10

Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama

Taylor Mays, Safety, USC

Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee

Tim Tebow, QB, Florida

This is going to dictate our entire draft and is our most important pick for several reasons. We can go several directions.

A lot of people predict the Broncos to select Rolando McClain. This would be a solid pick for us as McClain is the best linebacker in the draft. He comes from a 3-4 scheme and would make for a great combo with Doom.

Taylor Mays is simply a beast. He hits harder then anyone in this draft and would be a great pick to develop. He comes from USC where they have groomed some of the best defensive players in the NFL today. Imagine the hard hitting Taylor Mays being groomed by the master of hard hitting, Brian Dawkins? I shudder at the thought.

Dan Williams would be another good pick. He had a great season and might have passed Terrence Cody as the best NT in the draft. He would give the defense a big force on the line and depending on how they both do at the combine and in interviews, Terrence Cody could also be an option here.

Tim Tebow could be a possibility. I know that a lot of people are going to slam me for this pick, but hear me out.

Chris Simms isn't going to cut it. He had his chance this year and he showed that he is obviously not the backup that we need. Tebow is a proven winner and if you can't admit that,  then you are in hardcore denial. There are a ton of questions about his mechanics and his ability to run a pro style offense. However, his attitude, work ethic, and leadership skills are going to impress head coach Josh McDaniels. It's up to McD to pull the trigger or not.

Second Round, Pick # 46

Colt McCoy, QB, Texas

Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame

Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida

Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford

Everson Griffin, DE, USC

Kyle Calloway, OT, Iowa

This is the pick with the most options because it will be heavily influenced by our first pick. I firmly believe that we are going to address the QB situation in this draft and we will not use another late round QB pick like last year.

Banking on a QB that we drafted late is a huge gamble to say the least. Brandstater could be our future, but we won't know for some time. If we are going to get a QB in the draft, we are going have to get a big name.

Colt McCoy is a great option. He proved in 2009 that he is a winner, taking his team to the national championship. He is accurate with a better arm then Orton and I believe  we will draft him. He can be groomed for a year or two by McD and then become our QB. Obviously McCoy will not be drafted if we draft either Tebow or another QB before this pick.

Golden Tate would lessen the blow from the loss of Marshall. He isn't the tallest player, maybe 6', but he is pretty fast, and has good hands. He has big play potential and would be a nice target for Orton, or whoever our QB will be next year.

Brandon Spikes would only be available at this position because of his character issues,   but he is a very good linebacker.  At 6' 3" and 4.6 speed, he could be anchor to a new feared Bronco defense. This pick would not happen if the Broncos select Rolando McClain.

Toby Gerhart is a master of plowing people over. He looked like a man among boys in college with his 1,871 yards and 27 touchdowns his senior year. He could be the big short yard back we are looking for. A Gerhart and Moreno combination would give us a lot of depth at that position.

Everson Griffin proved a lot in his senior year at USC. There were a bunch of questions about his work ethic and if he was going to fulfill his potential. He has very quick hands and has good speed. He finished with 18 sacks and has very nice potential for the future. I like the pairing of him and Doom.

Kyle Calloway is another great offensive lineman from Iowa but Mike Iupati is probably the best to come out of Iowa this season. He won't be available for this pick. Kyle Calloway is 6'7" and 315 pounds. He will be a monster for whoever drafts him. He would be a very nice addition to a Bronco offensive line that struggled late in the season.

Third Round

Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas

Sean Lee, ILB, Penn State

Anthony McCoy, TE, USC

Tony Moeaki, TE, Iowa

Sam Young, OT, Notre Dame

Jordan Shipley would be a nice slot receiver with his great hands and speed. However, he does have a history of injuries and at age 25, is very old for a player about to be drafted. He could be a dangerous weapon in this league.

Sean Lee is my last case resort for a linebacker. Andrea Davis isn't our LB for the future and so we are going to want to address the position in the draft. Rolando McClain or Brandon Spikes would be preferable, but Lee is still a very solid player. I don't think he will be available here. He does have a history of some injuries, but he would be a great pick up at this spot.

I am going to lump Anthony McCoy and Tony Moeaki together in this pick. These are both very talented players and stand at 6'4". McCoy doesn't get off the line very quickly and Moeaki was not always an active part of the offense at Iowa, however, either one would be a nice replacement for Tony Scheffler.

Sam Young's stock is falling and his position is one that we need to address. The end of the year collapse has to partly fall on the offensive line as they were not performing as well as they were earlier in the season.

Fourth Round

Jamar Wall, CB, Texas Tech

Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas

Danario Alexander, WR, Missouri

Brian Jackson, CB, Arkansas

Stanley Havili, FB, USC

Jamar Wall is a hard hitting corner from Texas Tech. Sound familiar? We drafted hard hitting safety Darcel McBath last year and Jamar Wall would be a nice pick up. He is on the short side, but his speed, and hard hitting ability would be a good asset for the future. Especially when trained by Champ.

Dezmon Briscoe is 6'3" and finished his career at Kansas as the all-time leading receiver. I see a bright future for this kid with has nice hands and decent speed. He is another player that would be a good pick up should we lose Marshall.

Danario Alexander has a very attractive 6'5" frame and has the right look for a wide receiver in this league. He could very well shoot up into earlier rounds with some good workouts. If he was available here, Denver would do well to pick him because he would be a very big/nice target for our QB. He has incredibly attractive long ball potential.

Brian Jackson would be a decent replacement for Champ Bailey when he retires. He has a decent 6'2" size and plays the run very physically. He blankets receivers in coverage and could have a solid special teams effect much like Darcell McBath.

Fullbacks are primarily used as blockers in the NFL and Stanley Havili can block, catch the ball out of the back field, and run the ball very effectively. With a 4.5 running speed, he would be a nice pick up to help lighten the load for Spencer Larsen in the blocking game.

Sixth Round

Myron Rolle, Safety, Florida State

Daryl Washington, ILB, TCU

Nate Collins, DT, Virginia

Dennis Pitta, TE, BYU

Zoltan Mesko, P, Michigan

At 6' 2" and 218 pounds, Myron Rolle has great speed and is incredibly smart : a Rhodes Scholar. McD loves smart players with character and Rolle fits that bill perfectly. He is projected to go in the 5-6 round while his potential is WAY better than that.

Daryl Washington is projected as a 4-3 linebacker. They say that he is too small at 6'2" to play in a 3-4 scheme but I tend to disagree. He has great instincts and has excellent straight line speed. Mike Nolan could make a great player out of this guy.

Nate Collins is 6'2" and was first team all Atlantic Coast-Conference. He finished with 77 tackles and would be a nice addition to our defensive line.

Dennis Pitta is a skilled receiver with great hands. He had a nice receiving career at BYU but is a bit weak in the blocking game. He does have some work to do, but he could be a nice backup tight end for Denver.

Zoltan Mesko is a second team all-American and arguably the most talented punter in the draft. He will probably be drafted somewhere around here so Denver will want to take a look at him. We definitely need an upgrade at punter. Mitch Berger just doesn't cut it.

Seventh round

Eddie Hicks, Safety, Southern Miss

Tony Washington, OT, Abilene Christian

Stephen Williams, WR, Toledo

Jim Cordle, OC, Ohio State

LaGarrette Blount, RB, Oregon

Eddie Hicks would be a decent special teams' player. He isn't flashy, but he is hard-working and gets his job done. Why not spend a seventh on someone like that?

Tony Washington is 6'7" and 300 lbs. No more to discuss. He is a big boy that might be worth the last pick.

Stephen Williams finished his career at Toledo with 229 receptions and 3,102 yards. Most intriguing is that he is 6'5". It's would be hard to trust someone from Toledo with not as much experience against big time players, but he might be worth the risk.

Jim Cordle had a injury-plagued senior year, but he was the most experienced lineman on the Buckeyes squad. He could be a decent seventh rounder.

LaGarrette Blount is famous for his punch after the Boise State game. He has character issues to say the least; however, he is talented. If he falls this far, he is worth the pick.

That's all folks. Feel free to speculate. I would love to hear what you guys think. I look forward to all the anti-Tebow comments. Let the fun and speculation begin.
