Mel Kiper, Todd McShay NFL Mock Draft 2017: Notable Picks from 2-Round Mocks

Rob GoldbergApr 6, 2017

With the 2017 NFL draft drawing closer, ESPN analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay have made their predictions for the first two rounds.

While there are a few similarities in the mock drafts, including Myles Garrett and Solomon Thomas going first and second overall, the two mostly separated directions from there. This includes the obvious debate over the top player at each position, like Corey Davis and Mike Williams being the first receiver off the board or Ryan Ramczyk versus Cam Robinson at offensive tackle.

Here are the full picks from the two experts.

Notable Kiper Picks

New York Jets: Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina

The first quarterback off the board in either draft was Mitchell Trubisky to the New York Jets. This comes on the heels of the North Carolina quarterback hosting a private workout with the team in Chapel Hill, per Brian Costello of the New York Post.

While the Jets obviously need to solve their questions at quarterback, they still have both Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg on the roster without much idea about what they can do. The latter was a second-round pick last season and never saw the field as a rookie.

Trubisky is a high-upside passer with athleticism, although he lacks experience with just one year as a starter. No matter where he lands, it will likely take some time before he is ready to compete at the NFL level.

If the Jets take Trubisky, though, it will simply create a jumbled mess at the sport's most important position.

Dallas Cowboys: Jabrill Peppers, S, Michigan

Few players in the draft are as divisive as Jabrill Peppers. The Heisman Trophy finalist is one of the best athletes in the class, with the versatility to play multiple positions on defense.

He also can contribute on special teams or offense with his playmaking ability.

On the other hand, few are certain about where he will play at the next level. The college linebacker profiles best as a safety, but his lack of experience raises some concerns. This could put him in the top 10 of the draft or outside the first round.

With that said, the Dallas Cowboys make a lot of sense as a landing spot. The team lost both Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox in free agency, leaving an opening at safety next to Byron Jones. Even if he doesn't line up at one spot every time, he could be an impact player on the defense that helps the Super Bowl contender right out of the gate.

Notable McShay Picks

Los Angeles Chargers: Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson

TAMPA, FL - JANUARY 09: Quarterback Deshaun Watson #4 of the Clemson Tigers reacts after a touchdown by running back Wayne Gallman #9 (not pictured) during the fourth quarter against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2017 College Football Playoff National

There are clearly a handful of quarterback-needy teams in the NFL. However, McShay's first round features only those settled at the position going after some of the young stars.

One of those is the Los Angeles Chargers with the selection of Deshaun Watson. Although Philip Rivers is 35 years old, he has thrown for over 4,000 yards in eight of the last nine seasons. Even with turnovers becoming a problem lately, he is far from the biggest issue for this franchise.

Still, McShay sees this move as creating a "clear succession plan" at the position when Rivers does retire.

Similarly, the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints will also target signal-callers in this mock draft. With each of the top prospects likely needing some time to develop, this might be a realistic scenario.

Philadelphia Eagles: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford

This is a deep draft for running backs with Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Joe Mixon and Alvin Kamara all potentially being first-round picks. However, Christian McCaffrey could become the best in the class.

The Stanford star showed off his athleticism at the combine, posting a 40-yard dash time of 4.48 seconds while also impressing in the three-cone drill and shuttle runs.

Peter Schrager of Fox Sports believes he could be taken in the top 10 picks.

His heading to the Philadelphia Eagles provides the squad with a consistent presence in the backfield who can excel both on the ground or through the air. Considering the up-and-down seasons from Ryan Mathews, Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood last year, the team needs someone reliable.

McCaffrey can take some of the pressure off Carson Wentz with a productive first season in the NFL.
