Jonathan Allen at Alabama Pro Day 2017: Photos, Video Highlights and Reaction
University of Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen took part in the Crimson Tide's pro day workout Wednesday at the program's facilities in Tuscaloosa.
Allen entered the offseason as one of the top prospects in the 2017 NFL draft class. His stock has come into question over the past week, however, due to a combination of concerns about lingering shoulder issues and a mundane performance at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported the decorated defensive end—he was the 2016 SEC Defensive Player of the Year while also winning the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Chuck Bednarik Award—took part in the annual prospect showcase in Indianapolis with the hope of eliminating doubts.
Alabama team doctor Lyle Cain told Rapoport the star's worrisome shoulders, which have each required surgery in the past, weren't a problem during his last few seasons with the Tide.
"Jonathan has really played without symptoms in his shoulders, and it's something that has not affected his performance or function," Cain said. "It doesn't have to be treated during the season. And he's had a couple of great years."
Alas, his mediocre testing results at the combine raised further questions and shifted additional attention to his work at Bama's pro day.
Bleacher Report's Matt Miller listed Allen as the No. 7 overall prospect on his most recent big board. He provided further context on Twitter about what he's hearing from sources:
It's hard to imagine anything that happened Wednesday will change the outlook in a major way.
Allen opted against running the 40-yard dash after posting five seconds flat in the test at the combine. That's a slow result for teams thinking he could become a pure edge asset at the next level. He instead focused mostly on positional drills.
Michael Casagrande of the Birmingham News highlighted Allen showing off his ability and footwork:
Chase Goodbread of NFL.com showcased the lineman running the "Figure 8" drill:
Duane Rankin of the Montgomery Advertiser passed along a look at Allen trying to show off his first step, which didn't look as explosive as it usually did in game action with the Tide:
Finally, Stephen M. Smith of Touchdown Alabama magazine provided video of more line work:
While Allen didn't do anything to cause his stock to plummet over the past few weeks, his status as a potential top-five selection is in jeopardy. That's going to make his interviews with interested teams before the draft even more important.
Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com noted the Alabama standout met with five clubs in recent days:
Ultimately, it's important not to place too much emphasis on the offseason workout circuit compared to the last two years of high-end production he posted for Alabama. He's still a first-day talent, but exactly where he will land within the opening round is now up for debate.
