NFL Week 13 Top Game to Watch

New York Giants at Pittsburgh Steelers

The New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers are among the most storied franchises in NFL history, and their Week 13 meeting will be huge in terms of remaining in the playoff hunt.

New York is among the league's biggest surprises this season, as it boasts the NFC's second-best record at 8-3 behind only the Dallas Cowboys.

The G-Men have struggled in recent years, having not reached the playoffs since winning the Super Bowl at the conclusion of the 2011 season. They have also already clinched their first season with a record of .500 or better in four years, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano:

Changing head coaches from Tom Coughlin to Ben McAdoo has seemingly sparked the team, as have the improvements made on defense during the offseason.

New York spent big on the likes of Janoris Jenkins, Olivier Vernon and Damon Harrison, which has helped push the Giants to fifth in scoring defense.

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is also rounding back into the form he displayed prior to last year's fireworks accident, and that has shown up in his stat totals over the past couple of weeks, per NFL Research:

That defense is in for a huge test in Week 13, however, as it will take on a Steelers offense that boasts quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Le'Veon Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown.

The Roethlisberger-to-Brown connection was especially impressive in Week 12 to the tune of three touchdowns, and holding that in check will be a big key to New York's success.

Similarly, Pittsburgh's defense will be tasked with figuring out how to slow down quarterback Eli Manning's rapport with wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr.

Doing so may have gotten even more difficult this week, as the Giants brought in Peyton Manning as a guest to break down what the Steelers do on defense.

According to ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan, Eli got some potentially useful pointers from his big brother: "Yeah, he gave some insight. Just some stuff that was successful; he's played Pittsburgh a lot over the years. Played 'em last year in the playoffs. So [he] just had a few tips or ideas that may fit into our system."

That could give the Giants a slight edge, although Pittsburgh's struggles against quality teams this season suggest they may not even need it, per David Todd of ESPN Pittsburgh:

The Steelers are currently tied for first in the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens, and based on the way the conference is shaping up, it may need to win the division to reach the playoffs.

That makes every game important, especially at home. New York has a bit more breathing room, although a loss would further damage the Giants' already fading hopes of catching the Cowboys for the NFC East lead.

Sunday's contest is a big one for both teams in terms of maintaining positive momentum entering the season's final month, and it could turn out to be one of 2016's premier games if both explosive offenses fire on all cylinders.
