NFL Contingency-Planning for Games Potentially Impacted by Hurricane Matthew
The NFL is devising contingency plans for two Week 5 games that could be affected by Hurricane Matthew.
According to USA Today's Tom Pelissero, Natalie Ravitz, the NFL's senior vice president of communications, released the following statement regarding Sunday's game between the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans and Monday night's clash between the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported on Thursday that the NFL has yet to make a final call about moving or rescheduling the game between the Titans and Dolphins, but he noted that "a one-day delay to Monday is possible; a two-day weather delay also wouldn’t be unprecedented (e.g., Vikings-Eagles in December 2010)."
Florio also mentioned the idea of moving the game to a stadium that isn't scheduled to be in use this week, such as the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans or the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
On Friday, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald reported that the Dolphins are preparing to play at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday unless they're told otherwise.
Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 storm with winds in excess of 140 mph, is set to hit Florida's Atlantic coast.
"Extremely dangerous, life-threatening weather conditions are forecast in the next 24 hours," the National Weather Service said Thursday, according to the New York Times. "Airborne debris lofted by extreme winds will be capable of breaching structures, unprotected windows and vehicles."
On Thursday, LSU and Florida were forced cancel their SEC clash, which was scheduled for Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida, according to the Advocate's Ross Dellenger.
