C.J. Spiller Signs with Seattle Seahawks

Timothy RappSep 20, 2016

Veteran running back C.J. Spiller agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The news comes after Spiller had visits with multiple other teams.

Rapoport reported Monday that Spiller would be working out for the New York Jets on Tuesday. The Green Bay Packers reportedly had a visit with Spiller on Sept. 20, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.

Spiller, 29, appeared in 13 games last season with the New Orleans Saints, rushing 36 times for 112 yards and adding 34 receptions for 239 yards and two scores.

The Saints released Spiller on Sept. 13, however, just one year after signing a four-year, $16 million deal. Head coach Sean Payton discussed that somewhat surprising move, per Nick Underhill of the Advocate:

Underhill added:

"

Spiller's snaps were limited, but you could see it when he was out there. He was cutting and bursting and making plays. And then, unexpectedly, he was scratched before [Week 1's] game against the Oakland Raiders.

Payton said it was because the game was a better fit for [Travaris] Cadet. That might be true. The team often operated out of empty backfields with Cadet split out like a receiver, a spot where he often makes plays. But it was disappointing since that was something Spiller used to do in Buffalo, and that's a role he should be able to thrive in.

Instead, he was replaced by a player who was cut before the season and then brought back, foreshadowing what was about to happen.

"

Despite New Orleans' willingness to cut ties with Spiller, the running back still feels he can contribute in the NFL.

"I'm just going to wait for the next right opportunity," Spiller told Josina Anderson of ESPN. "I still have a lot of football left in me."

Perhaps, but at this point in his career, Spiller seems best suited as a third-down or passing-down back for Seattle. He's rushed for over 1,000 yards in his career just once and has a total of 412 rushing yards in his past two seasons combined, so his days as a feature back are behind him.
