Week 3 Waiver Wire: Projecting Top Fantasy Football Adds and Drops

The waiver wire can be pretty hit or miss in fantasy football, but every now and then you can find a diamond in the rough. The most difficult part about finding diamonds is sorting through all the rubble. 

While it's only Week 2, patience is wearing thin with some fantasy owners who are eager to kick-start their respective seasons. Some players have made great leaps and have been pleasant surprises, while some have been massive disappointments.

Take a player like running back Thomas Rawls for the Seattle Seahawks. Many speculated that he would be a No. 1 running back option this season, and though he's had a tough start to the 2016 season, there are some analysts who still believe in him. 

While I wouldn't go as far to drop Rawls at this point, he certainly has no right to start in your lineup in Week 3 or any week for that matter until he proves himself on the field.

Below, you'll find the best players available at each offensive position that are available in over 50 percent of Yahoo fantasy leagues. Who knows? A replacement for Rawls could be there, too.

Joe Flacco, QB, Baltimore Ravens

Flacco looked dangerous against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2.

While he did turn over the ball twice (two interceptions), Flacco finished with 302 passing yards and two scores. Flacco put up 18.18 points in Week 2 and is a viable quarterback to insert into your lineup if you're desperate for a quarterback to rack up points or to hold on to down the fort for when the bye weeks come.

But looking at Week 3, Flacco should not be on the waiver wire. If it was that easy for Flacco to put up 18.18 points against the Browns, imagine the type of game he'll have when the Ravens take on the Jacksonville Jaguars next weekend.

Jacksonville's defense has allowed six passing touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks through two weeks and now that Flacco seems to have found a favorite red-zone target in Mike Wallace, the Ravens passing offense could have a field day against the Jaguars and their vulnerable secondary. 

Owned in just 29 percent of Yahoo leagues, Flacco could be a steal this week. 

Jerick McKinnon/Matt Asiata, RBs, Minnesota Vikings

This is a special two-for-one deal for Week 3.

No one player can replace Adrian Peterson's production, he's just that good. But a two-headed monster of Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata might do the trick.

McKinnon is a very capable, quick tailback who is only owned in 23 percent of Yahoo leagues as of Monday night. With a career average of 4.9 yards per carry, McKinnon is the type of back who will rack up yards, but if you can it might also be a good idea to pick up Matt Asiata, who should factor in as the red-zone, goal-line back.

Owned in just 2 percent of Yahoo leagues, adding Asiata should not be an issue. 

In any case, both backs should be able to put up numbers in Week 3 regardless of how head coach Mike Zimmer decides to split the carries. Both backs will see the field plenty of times on Sunday, and Zimmer has faith that they can make up for the loss of Peterson, he told reporters. 

Eddie Royal, WR, Chicago Bears

Is Eddie Royal a top fantasy wideout this season? That thought may not be as crazy as one might think.

With 22.90 points through the first two weeks of the season, Royal has more fantasy points than Jordy Nelson, Alshon Jeffrey, Amari Cooper, Jeremy Maclin, Odell Beckham Jr. and Demaryius Thomas. That's not too shabby.

Royal can score points from a multitude of ways, as seen above with his 65-yard punt return on Monday night. Not only can he operate downfield in the slot, he's also one of the most dangerous receivers on screen plays if he's given room to operate at the line of scrimmage. 

It's astonishing that he's only owned in 5 percent of leagues at the moment, and it might be worth your while to take a chance on a player who can make a big play at any given time.

Vance McDonald, TE, San Francisco 49ers

Vance McDonald doesn't see the football a lot, but when he does he scores touchdowns. He's the most interesting tight end in the NFL.

With two touchdowns in two weeks, McDonald is garnering attention for his big-play ability so far this season.

While McDonald doesn't see many targets, he makes the most out of his opportunities. Last week against the Los Angeles Rams, McDonald caught two passes for 14 yards with a score. Against the Panthers in Week 2, he caught one pass for 75 yards, which went for a touchdown.

That 75-yard touchdown reception was good enough for the second-longest touchdown grab by a tight end in 49ers history, behind Ted Kwalick's 81-yard touchdown back in 1972, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. 

His lack of targets can mean only one thing for fantasy owners: if he doesn't score a touchdown, he's not getting any points. He's only owned in 21 percent of Yahoo leagues. While McDonald isn't one of the most attractive options in the world, keep in mind that he's the second-highest scoring tight end this season, just behind Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen.
