Davis' Return Unknown After Practice Injury
Friday, Sept. 16
Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee confirmed Friday the tackle has officially been ruled out of the Niners' Week 2 contest.
Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle noted Davis suffered the injury during Thursday's practice and reported it to the medical staff afterward.
Last June, the 2010 first-round pick announced he was taking time away from the sport. Ryan Wilson of CBSSports.com passed along a statement from the lineman at the time about the situation.
"After a few years of thought, I've decided it will be best for me to take a year or so away from the NFL," Davis said. "This will be a time for me to allow my brain and body a chance to heal. I know many won't understand my decision, that's OK."
Davis returned to the 49ers in time for this year's training camp. His status came into question again last week, however, when Cam Inman of the Mercury News reported Davis considered heading back into retirement before the new season started.
The 26-year-old Rutgers product ended up playing in the team's Week 1 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, though he played guard rather than his natural tackle spot. Inman noted there was no further retirement talk despite Thursday's health setback.
Now his status is uncertain as he works back from the concussion. No timetable was provided for his potential return to the lineup.
Andrew Tiller figures to fill the void at guard for the time being and could remain the starter should Davis shift back to tackle once healthy. Rookie Joshua Garnett, one of the team's first-round picks this year, will now be the chief reserve at both guard spots.
