Carson Wentz Has NFL's Top-Selling Jersey After Week 1

Tyler ConwaySep 13, 2016

Carson Wentz's first week as an NFL starter could not have gone better. He threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a win over the Cleveland Browns.

Now it seems that success has carried itself over to off-field popularity.

According to Nick Schwartz of Fox Sports, NFL retailer Fanatics lists Wentz as the NFL's top-selling jersey through the first week of action. He ranks just ahead of Pro Bowl stalwarts Odell Beckham Jr. and Tom Brady and three spots ahead of fellow rookie Dak Prescott, who ascended to the Dallas Cowboys' starting quarterback job due to a Tony Romo injury.

That Wentz would be near the top of jersey lists isn't a surprise. He was the No. 2 overall pick in April's draft, plays the most important position on the field and joined one of the NFL's most popular franchises. That's like the jersey jackpot.

Wentz ascending all the way to No. 1 is a bit more surprising, though there were some extenuating circumstances that helped him. While Wentz ranked a very respectable sixth in preseason jersey sales, nearly all of those came when he was the expected backup. The Eagles operated the entire preseason under the assumption that Sam Bradford would be their starter and an injured Wentz would play sparingly in 2016.

Things changed abruptly when the Eagles shipped Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings. Wentz suddenly moved into the top spot ahead of presumed No. 2 Chase Daniel. Those who were waffling on a potential purchase, looking to replace a Bradford jersey or waiting things out to see if Wentz panned out were all left to make a quick decision.

More interesting is the fact that Jared Goff, the No. 1 pick in April, is nowhere to be found. Considered the face of the Rams franchise after their move to Los Angeles, Goff is currently behind Case Keenum on the depth chart.

While it was considered a major risk when the Eagles moved up to the second spot to take Wentz, this week has been filled with nothing but positive signs.
