Kevin Durant Supports Colin Kaepernick for Sitting During National Anthem

Adam WellsSep 9, 2016

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is getting more support for his protest of the national anthem from new Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant.

Speaking to Anthony Slater of the San Jose Mercury News, Durant explained why he is standing behind Kaepernick:

"

I’m behind anyone who stands up for what they believe in. [Kaepernick] is standing up for what he believes in. That’s what makes our country so great, right? You have the luxury to do so. He was unapologetic about it and, in his defense, I don’t think he was trying to disrespect anyone. I think he was trying to get his point across. I’m all for anyone who wants to do that. As athletes, we have this huge platform. A lot of people are watching at all times. Sometimes it may not be what you do, they like. But if you feel like it’s gonna be impactful, that’s on you. I feel like everyone should stand up for what they believe.

This is the second Warriors player Kaepernick has received public support from for his effort to, as he told NFL.com's Sam Wyche, not "show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people."

During an interview with CNBC, Stephen Curry said that he applauds Kaepernick for standing up for what he believes in.

Kaepernick's goal of bringing awareness to issues impacting various social injustices in this country has struck a chord with many athletes. His former college teammate and current Denver Broncos linebacker, Brandon Marshall, took a knee during the national anthem before Thursday's season opener against Carolina.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin said on Twitter the entire team would "honor the country and flag in a pregame demonstration of unity" after teammate Jeremy Lane sat on the bench during the anthem prior to their last preseason game.

In addition to his protest, Kaepernick and the 49ers have pledged to donate money to various organizations that help address inequalities in this country.
