Fantasy Football Week 14: Tuesday's Daily Fantasy Market Report

Richard JanvrinDec 6, 2016

Week 14 of the fantasy football season is set to kick off with the Oakland Raiders on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs. What's up with the NFL lately? A decent product on Thursday nights? Weird.

For many leagues, this marks the first round of the fantasy football playoffs—a time where decisions could literally make or break your season. Starting the wrong player in season-long leagues is not an option this week.

For DFS players, this is just another week filled with trying to peg the right players. In Week 14, though, we have two notable offensive players returning from injured reserve and a few injuries to keep track of so we can locate value.

With that said, we did see some extremely gruesome injuries in Week 13, including Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Cecil Shorts III and New Orleans Saints tight end Josh Hill.

One of those players returning in Week 14? It looks like we could see a comeback from Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Just imagine—there could actually be a lineup in Week 14 of the 2016 NFL season that consists of RG3, Buccaneers wide receiver Freddie Martino and Buccaneers running back Charles Sims.

Man, is this sport wild. Let's catch up on some news in the wake of Week 13.

Falcons WR Julio Jones Dealing with Turf Toe

1 of 10

According to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com, Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn announced that wide receiver Julio Jones is dealing with turf toe, but noted that it is expected to be fine.

No, it's nothing new that Jones is beat up, but turf toe is an extremely uncomfortable injury.

With that said, Coach Quinn might be right here—Jones should be fine. If he suits up, he's tough to ignore in DFS any given week.

Browns QB RG3 to Return in Week 14?

2 of 10

After being cleared for contact just a week ago, we could see Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III out on the field in Week 14 against the Cincinnati Bengals "depending on how practice goes," according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

At the minimum salary across the DFS industry, RG3 is going to be a tough commodity to pass up, especially in cash games.

Rostering a quarterback for the bare minimum allows for multiple studs in a lineup, which in turn should strengthen your chances of winning.

Don't have high expectations for RG3 in his return, though—he hasn't played since Week 1 and the Bengals rank 17th in DVOA against the pass.

Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin to Play in Week 14?

3 of 10

Set to play on Thursday Night Football, the Kansas City Chiefs are "optimistic" that wide receiver Jeremy Maclin will play after missing the team's last four games with a groin injury, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

No, you shouldn't play Maclin in DFS, but his return means that we are going to see tight end Travis Kelce's production drop.

In Week 13, Kelce became the first ever pass-catcher to reach 100 or more yards in three consecutive games with Alex Smith at quarterback.

With Maclin back, Smith might spread the ball around more, keeping in mind Kelce, Maclin and the emergence of fellow wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Whenever you hear "Alex Smith" and "spread the ball around" it can only get worse from there.

Saints TE Josh Hill out for the Season with Broken Fibula

4 of 10

Um, ouch.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, New Orleans Saints tight end Josh Hill is out for the season with a broken fibula that he suffered during Week 13.

Hill had recently become a bigger part of the offense, seeing six targets in Week 12, and was set to be a low-cost tight end option in Week 13 in what was supposed to be a high-scoring affair between the Saints and Detroit Lions.

With Hill now out for the season, there is one less weapon at quarterback Drew Brees' disposal, but there are still plenty to go around.

It appears that we'll have to look at other bargain-barrel tight end options moving forward.

Buccaneers WR Cecil Shorts III Suffers Career-Threatening Injury

5 of 10

I'm sure New Orleans Saints tight end Josh Hill is hurting, but it's impossible to fathom what Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Cecil Shorts III is going through.

Bare with me here.

According to Britt McHenry of ESPN, Shorts suffered a dislocated knee and a torn MCL, ACL and PCL.

That has to be one of the most brutal injuries to date in the NFL.

Of course, Shorts is done for the season. With him being out for the season, this opens up more work for fellow wide receiver Freddie Martino, who has come on in recent weeks.

If wide receiver Adam Humphries were to be ruled out in Week 14 due to a concussion, Martino would move to the No. 3 wide receiver spot for the Buccaneers.

We'll follow this storyline as the week unfolds. Martino could be a quality, dirt-cheap option in DFS this week.

Let's hope Shorts has a speedy recovery. Unreal.

Eagles RB Ryan Mathews, WR Jordan Matthews Expected to Practice Wednesday

6 of 10

According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews and wide receiver Jordan Matthews should return to practice Wednesday.

With the potential return of Mathews (who has missed the last two games), the Eagles backfield is back to a three-headed monster of Mathews, Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood. The only safe option from the trio is Sproles because of his contributions in the passing game.

For Matthews (with two Ts), he'll be rejoining the team after missing Week 13 with an ankle injury. In Week 14, the Eagles will host the Washington Redskins, who rank 18th in DVOA against the pass.

Based on his price at DraftKings of $5,400, Matthews should make for a decent cash-game play, but his upside is limited in GPPs due to his lack of scoring. Also, tight end Zach Ertz seems to be a favorite for quarterback Carson Wentz, so there's also that production to compete with.

Avoid Mathews (one T), but Matthews should be an OK cash-game option because of his consistency in the receptions department.

Broncos QB Trevor Siemian Sheds Walking Boot; Arrow Pointing Up

7 of 10

Missing Week 13 due to a foot injury, the arrow appears to be pointing up for Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Siemian is out of his walking boot and "hopeful" to play in Week 14 against the Tennessee Titans.

In Week 13, rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch drew the start and was what you'd expect—50 percent completion percentage and 104 yards passing. Also, not a single pass-catcher outside of wide receivers Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas saw more than one target.

Siemian is not a player to target this week in DFS.

Falcons WR Mohamed Sanu Has Groin Injury; 'Could' Practice Thursday

8 of 10

The Atlanta Falcons wide receivers are beat up this week.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Falcons wide receiver Mohamed Sanu is dealing with a groin injury and "could" practice Thursday.

So not only is Julio Jones hurt, but Sanu is too.

By Thursday, we should have some answers on both of these guys. There are plenty of ramifications based off of who will play between these two and who will not.

Buccaneers to Activate RB Charles Sims?

9 of 10

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter expects running back Charles Sims to be activated from the injured reserve list and rejoin the 53-man roster.

With the injuries to wide receiver Cecil Shorts III and Adam Humphries, Sims is coming back at an opportune time to step in and produce.

Out since Week 4 with a knee injury, Sims averaged over four targets per game, seeing eight in Week 3, when he caught six of them for nearly 70 yards.

This is about as good a week for a player to make their return, too—the Buccaneers will host the Saints in Week 14.

Across the DFS landscape, Sims is priced low, so on sites that give points for receptions, he has some appeal, although don't go too crazy.

Remember, he hasn't played in over two months.

Broncos Send RB Kapri Bibbs to IR; Claim Justin Forsett

10 of 10

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Denver Broncos have placed running back Kapri Bibbs on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Prior to sending Bibbs to injured reserve, the team claimed veteran running back Justin Forsett off waivers, reuniting him with Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak while joining his third team this season.

Over the last two weeks, Bibbs had played 41 snaps to incumbent Broncos starting running back Devontae Booker's 83. In those snaps, Bibbs had 28 fewer carries (42-14), but was way more efficient than Booker, averaging over five yards per carry to Booker's 2.7.

As Mike Klis of 9News Denver put it, this is a bummer for Bibbs—Klis believes that Bibbs was about to overtake Booker on the depth chart.

With that in mind, does Forsett have a realistic opportunity to overtake Booker? That might be tough, but he could very well be involved in the game plan from day one, lowering Booker's' value.

I'm not likely to have any exposure to Booker on the road against the Titans. It just feels mediocre.
