Fantasy Football Week 9: Friday's Daily Fantasy Market Report
What's a better moniker for Week 9 of the fantasy football season? Bye-pocalypse 2.0 or "Welcome Back, Corey Coleman Week?"
The former makes sense because there are six teams on bye, and the latter makes sense because I'm in on Cleveland Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman this week in GPPs.
It's actually a good thing that my NBA DFS lineups distracted me before doing this slideshow—practice reports changed radically for quite a few players.
I'm actually excited for this slate.
There are a few guys not mentioned in this article that I'd like to bring attention to for GPPs: Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Kenny Britt ($4,400 DraftKings; $6,000 FanDuel), Baltimore Ravens running back Terrance West ($4,700 DK; $6,400 FD) and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Marqise Lee ($3,400 DK; $4,800 FD) are all in play for me this week.
You know what, I'll start doing that every Friday with these Daily Fantasy Market Reports—give you three solid GPP plays for the week. You just have to promise to not yell at me until the following Tuesday after the players do nothing. Deal?
There is some recent news that could change the complexion of some lineups, so read my words, OK?
Chargers TE Hunter Henry DNP Thursday
1 of 7
According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Chargers tight end Hunter Henry did not practice Thursday.
In case you're new to the whole "interpretation of practice reports" game, when a player doesn't practice this late in the week, it's definitely not a good sign.
Henry—who is dealing with a knee injury—will need to practice on at least a limited basis Friday to have any confidence in him playing.
At home against the Tennessee Titans in Week 9, fellow tight end Antonio Gates ($3,000 DK; $5,500 FD) would take over the primary role and offer savings—and also a bit of a contrarian play considering everyone and their brother will be on Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph ($4,000 DK; $5,000 FD).
Give Gates a look if Henry sits.
Bills RB LeSean McCoy 'Improving'
2 of 7
After being active (for whatever reason) in Week 7, leaving the game and then sitting out Week 8, it appears there is a chance that Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy could play in Week 9 against the Seattle Seahawks.
According to the Bills Twitter account, McCoy told the media that he was running some routes and felt good.
Dealing with a hamstring injury, this could be quite tricky—just look at Arian Foster's entire career.
Even if Shady does suit up, I'm not a fan of him against the Seahawks defense. No thanks, man.
Honestly, I'm not a fan of any Bills player in that game.
Browns WR Corey Coleman Back at Practice
3 of 7
According to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman ($4,500 DK; $5,600 FD) returned to practice in full on Thursday.
Don't look now, but I'm targeting Coleman in tournaments, and so should you.
Going up against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9 being home underdogs, I'm going to be anticipating a few shots downfield to Coleman in this one.
While it's not entirely certain who will start for the Browns in Week 9, the presence of fellow wide receiver Terrelle Pryor may cause more double-teams, thus opening the field for Coleman.
He's cheap this week and has a rather high ceiling in his first game back after the Cleveland Indians lost the World Series. Cleveland is going to want to give their fans something to smile about!
Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin DNP Thursday
4 of 7
After not appearing on the practice report Wednesday, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin ($5,900 DK; $6,700 FD) has been added to the injury report with a groin injury and did not practice Thursday, according to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star.
This is a new injury, which is never a good thing this deep into the week.
In my opinion, it's a sore groin and the Chiefs just didn't want to push it. Maclin should be fine, and I'm playing him in tournaments this week.
With Nick Foles starting at quarterback, I'm actually a bigger fan of the passing game.
I'm anticipating double-digit targets this week for Maclin. The Chiefs are at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and although Maclin could draw some coverage from Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey, I'm not worried. Maclin is a good receiver, it's his quarterback play that isn't receiver-friendly.
He costs less than $6,000 on DraftKings. Play him.
Ravens WR Steve Smith Sr. Limited at Practice Thursday
5 of 7
After missing the team's last two games due to an ankle injury, Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. ($5,400 DK; $5,500 FD) returned to practice Thursday on a limited basis for the first time since his injury, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.
Well this certainly changes things now doesn't it?
If Smith plays, he's a somewhat interesting tournament play, but there are concerns over how much he'll actually be on the field. It wouldn't shock me either way if he played 90 percent of the snaps or 25.
Given his price, I'd rather pay up a bit more for Jeremy Maclin in this spot, but I don't hate it against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 9.
49ers RB Carlos Hyde Has Sprained AC Joint
6 of 7
This is too bad because I was looking forward to playing him this week.
According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde ($6,100 DK; $7,000 FD) is dealing with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder.
To this point, Hyde returned to practice on Wednesday—albeit in a noncontact jersey—while dealing with this injury.
This sounds like a game-time decision call to me. Fortunately, we have late-swap on DraftKings, which is definitely helpful, but our options are limited when Hyde plays at 4:05 p.m. ET in Week 9.
Hopefully we can get an update on his status Friday.
If he suits up, I'm playing him this week against the lowly New Orleans Saints.
Eagles TE Zach Ertz and QB Carson Wentz 'Not in Sync?'
7 of 7
Quick side bar: I'm totally and 100 percent done with Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz.
With that said, he'll go for 100 yards and two scores this week.
Anyhoo, there appears to be trouble in paradise with Ertz and quarterback Carson Wentz.
According to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich has said that it's "fair" to say that Ertz and Wentz are not in sync.
Yeah, no kidding. Thanks, Frank.
This season, Ertz is averaging three receptions a game and has not scored yet. In an offense with Wentz—who is 26th in the league in yards per attempt—the tight end not doing anything is definitely mind-boggling.
Don't play him this week. Do. Not. Do. It.
