Martellus and Michael Bennett Discuss J.J. Watt, Jay Cutler, Eli Manning, More

Adam WellsAug 3, 2016

With 15 combined seasons of NFL experience under their belts, Michael and Martellus Bennett recently let loose on some of the notable stars they have played with and against over the years.

In an interview with ESPN The Magazine's Mina Kimes, the Bennett brothers said the first thing that came to their minds upon hearing a person's name.

The first name Kimes brought up was Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who Michael called the "worst quarterback in the NFL."

That's hardly a surprise since Bennett has gone on the record talking about "mediocre" quarterbacks who sign lucrative contracts, per Brady Henderson of ESPN 710 in Seattle.

The more interesting quote about Cutler came from Martellus, who played with the much-maligned quarterback in Chicago from 2013-15. Bennett said that he would "be open and he'd [Cutler] throw into double coverage."

In the past, Bennett compared Cutler to Jesus, according to Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times. No matter what Cutler does, he's going to draw criticism, even from former teammates.

On Thursday, Bears wide receiver Kevin White defended Cutler from the criticism from Martellus Bennett, via Ben Baskin of Sports Illustrated (Warning: Comments contain NSFW language):

Sticking with quarterbacks who got paid a surprising amount of money, Brock Osweiler was also a target of the Bennett duo. He signed a four-year deal worth up to $72 million ($37 million guaranteed) with the Houston Texans in the offseason after making seven starts across his first four seasons.

"I've got more sacks than he's got touchdowns," Michael told Kimes.

It's not even close, as Bennett has 40.5 sacks to Osweiler's 12 total touchdowns, yet Bennett continues to fight for a new contract from the Seattle Seahawks.

Martellus jumped on the Osweiler bandwagon by saying "I've caught more balls than he's completed." The 29-year-old tight end has caught 348 passes in his career, compared to 187 completions for Osweiler.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning did receive a sort-of compliment from Martellus: "He's cool. He's like a normal white guy you see at the park trying to teach his kids how to play soccer, and you know he can't really play soccer himself."

That's about the nicest thing either player said about anyone throughout the interview, though when Mines brought up J.J. Watt's name, Michael called him a "dominant player." Martellus called him "corny" but added that "half of the NFL is corny."

The best quotes in the interview came when Kimes asked about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford. She noted that both players smirked before Michael called him "the greatest quarterback in the NFL," and Martellus followed up with two words: "Vicious. Competitive."

Martellus, who the Bears traded to the New England Patriots this past March, had this to say about Tom Brady: "The silver fox you never get to see but you hear about. You only get to take one photo, and you have to stay outside for a year just to get it."

In an era in which so many athletes throw out non-stop cliches during interviews, the Bennett brothers are a refreshing change of pace. They don't seem to have a filter between their brains and mouths.

Much of what the Bennett brothers said may rub people the wrong way, but no one can fault their honesty. Casual fans would likely offer responses in line with what they said.
