Chargers Reportedly Working Out Hartline

Tuesday, Aug. 2

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Bolts worked out Hartline and James Jones.

The move comes on the heels of the report Monday that wideout Stevie Johnson suffered a torn meniscus, which requires surgery, per NFL Network's Michael Silver.

Hartline spent the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins after they selected him in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL draft out of Ohio State.

He posted a pair of 1,000-yard receiving seasons during his time in Miami, but his tenure with the team came to an end following the 2014 campaign.

Hartline signed with the Cleveland Browns prior to last season and registered 46 receptions for 523 yards and two touchdowns amid the team's quarterback carousel.

San Diego boasts a strong starting duo at wide receiver in Keenan Allen and Hartline's former Browns teammate Travis Benjamin, whom the Chargers signed in free agency in March.

Johnson was slated to be the slot receiver, but with his status in question, a more reliable third option than Dontrelle Inman or Javontee Herndon is needed.

While Hartline would be little more than a complementary piece behind Allen, Benjamin and future Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates, San Diego would be a solid landing spot since it employs a high-volume passing game spearheaded by quarterback Philip Rivers.

Hartline hasn't been overly productive the past two campaigns, but signing a player with two 1,000-yard seasons on his resume at this juncture of the offseason would be a solid coup for the Bolts.
