On Tuesday, TMZ published a story citing a source "very close" to Manziel who said the 23-year-old is "in a horrible downward spiral." Another source told TMZ that if Manziel's hard-partying behavior doesn't show signs of stopping, "he will die."
The concerns expressed by sources in the TMZ story echoed those voiced by Manziel's father, Paul, in February.
"I truly believe if they can't get him help, he won't live to see his 24th birthday," Paul Manziel told the Dallas Morning News' Kate Hairopoulos after his son refused to be admitted to rehabilitation clinics on two occasions.
Manziel was waived by the Cleveland Browns in March, and he's been out of work ever since.
On May 4, Manziel turned himself into police in Highland Park, Texas, after he was indicted on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge stemming from his alleged assault of ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley, according to USA Today's A.J. Perez.
If Manziel is convicted of the Class A misdemeanor, he faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000, per the Dallas Morning News' Jennifer Emily.
