Analyzing Latest Trade Rumors
The Josh Doctson Sweepstakes
For months, all folks heard about at wideout was chatter regarding Ole Miss' Laquon Treadwell and Baylor's Corey Coleman, but the narrative can shift at any hour.
Such is the case here with TCU wideout Josh Doctson. A darling of the draft community before the rest of the landscape caught on, he comes in at 6'2" and 202 pounds and pro-ready thanks to insane athleticism that lets him go up and get the ball at its peak.
It's why the Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings could do a bit of draft-day maneuvering to make sure they get him, according to NFL.com's Gil Brandt, via Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com:
Both teams could use the help.
The Vikings don't have Mike Wallace around, which leaves Stefon Diggs as the only notable pass-catcher to help young quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Cincinnati's situation isn't as dire, but after losing Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu this offseason, A.J. Green and Tyler Eifert could have a harder time than usual getting open.
Notice a theme? Teams that want to contend right away and in need of a pro-ready wideout lead the race for Doctson. With the clock ticking, don't be shocked when either makes a leap to get its guy.
Browns Moving Down for QB?
Conventional wisdom suggested the Cleveland Browns would hang around and maybe take a quarterback at No. 8.
Trading down was an unexpected move, but if new coach Hue Jackson really didn't like Jared Goff or Carson Wentz, then the organization made the best move by acquiring more assets to help the rebuild.
In fact, according to Marvez, the Browns remain a candidate to move down again and take a rather surprising name:
Michigan State's Connor Cook is an odd name who hasn't been in the first-round conversation much until now. A four-year starter with the Spartans, he never flashed the can't-miss talent most expected.
NFL.com's Lance Zierlein spoke with a former NFL general manager who summed it up well: "He has all the pieces, but he's never put the puzzle together. Coordinators and quarterback coaches always think they can fix those kinds of guys so they fight the hardest for them in the draft rooms I've been in."
Heck, in that same scouting report, Zierlein compares Cook to former Cleveland quarterback Brian Hoyer, who still remains an unsigned free agent.
Still, new coaches can behave oddly when it comes to getting "their guy" at the most important position of all. At No. 8, Jackson and Co. should still be in range to get Memphis' Paxton Lynch.
If Cook is the guy, though, it's a genius move to strike another trade. One of the league's most significant rebuilds could use the extra help. Nobody can doubt whoever Jackson takes, either, not with the good work he put in with Andy Dalton in Cincinnati while serving as offensive coordinator.
Sam Bradford's Options
One guy who is not amused with the Philadelphia Eagles moving up to presumably take Goff or Wentz?
Sam Bradford. Despite signing a two-year deal with the Eagles and representing a cap hit of $12.5 million in 2016 and $22.5 million in 2017, according to Spotrac, Bradford is looking for a way out.
Like everyone else, he understands the No. 2 pick starts under center once he's ready, which for a top-two pick should be right away. That's why NFL Network's Jeff Darlington spoke with 97.5 The Fanatic about Bradford's options:
Call it an interesting two-part revelation.
The New York Jets still need a quarterback, but why would the team go out of its way to sign Bradford? The team's starter from last year, Ryan Fitzpatrick, still sits unwanted on the open market, which means sooner or later he'll probably end up inking a new deal at perhaps the only locale that wants him to keep starting, but at a team-friendly price.
Then there's Chip Kelly with the San Francisco 49ers. Kelly is in his first year with the team after floundering in Philadelphia and has the duo of Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert to sort out, not to mention what could be a top-10 pick joining the mix via the draft.
In other words, Bradford doesn't mind the cash he's making but wants what appears to be a surefire starting gig. Maybe that's out there, maybe it isn't, but the Eagles dumping him during the draft for a nice haul once another team gets desperate as the event unfolds seems like one of the surest things about the proceedings.
