Powers to Visit with Giants
Wednesday, March 30
Josina Anderson of ESPN reported Wednesday the 28-year-old defensive back is set to meet with the New York Giants on Thursday as he seeks a landing spot for the 2016 campaign.
The Giants have worked to upgrade their secondary during the offseason after owning the league's worst pass defense last season. They added Janoris Jenkins, a high-risk, high-reward playmaking corner, earlier in March to start opposite Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
Powers would likely slide into the No. 3 role if he eventually signs with New York. He would represent some much needed depth and could easily slot into the starting lineup if injuries arise or one of the starters struggles.
Powers Struggled Opposite Peterson in Cardinals Secondary
Powers, a third-round selection of the Indianapolis Colts in 2009, spent the past three seasons with the Cardinals. He racked up 50 tackles, nine passes defended and an interception across 13 games in 2015. He missed some time due to a hamstring injury.
He's served mostly as a No. 2 or No. 3 corner during his time with the Colts and the Cardinals. While he's never been a ball hawk (11 interceptions in seven years), he's usually been a solid cover corner.
There were times last season when he struggled, as teams targeted him frequently opposite Patrick Peterson, though. In turn, Pro Football Focus graded him as the No. 75 corner out of 119 qualifiers at the position in 2015.
After the campaign ended, the veteran stated he hoped the Cardinals would be able to keep the secondary together, per Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com: "Going into this offseason, I want to be here, (safety) Rashad (Johnson) wants to be here, we all want to be together. So, we'll just see what happens. I'm going into my eighth year so I understand the business of it."
Johnson has since signed with the Tennessee Titans, and now, it appears Powers could be heading to a new home, as well.
All told, he should be a nice value signing at this stage of free agency, whether it's with the Cardinals or another team.
