Marshawn Lynch Sends Jersey to Mother of HS Football Player Killed in Shooting

Dan CarsonDec 2, 2015

Marshawn Lynch's philanthropic acts and general goodness off the field remain a steady, if lightly recognized, facet of his person.

Through his Fam 1st Family Foundation, Lynch regularly works to give back to the youth of Northern California, particularly in the Bay Area. He's also used his podium as a public figure to speak out against violence in his hometown of Oakland.

So it stands in lockstep with his general character that when Lynch heard about the shooting death of a high school football player in Sacramento in November, he quietly reached out to the grieving family to offer his respects.

Sporting News' Ron Clements noted a recent Facebook post written by Lynch's former Cal teammate Quan Thompson detailing the situation.

As Thompson explains it, Lynch went out of his way in November to comfort the mother of Jaulon "JJ" Clavo—a senior cornerback at Grant High School who was shot and killed hours before a playoff game while getting food off campus with his friends.

An alumnus of Grant High, Thompson knew of Jaulon's passing and was moved when he found out Lynch had sent his condolences and a custom Seahawks jersey to the victim's mother, Japhera.

Yeah. That's a pretty nice gesture, particularly for a guy with a season-threatening abdomen injury on his mind and the prospect of retirement looming large.

But hey—that's Marshawn, the millionaire who'll drive to your house to return your wallet and works with young gun-shot victims in his free time.

It's what he does.
