Daily Fantasy Football November 29: DFS Stock Up, Stock Down

Chris RolingNov 28, 2015

Last-second stock fluctuations can sink a daily fantasy football owner.

Whereas changes on the standard-league stock market don't hurt owners too much, a shift in daily formats can ruin an entire day, as owners have to retool each spot in the lineup to make the salary cap numbers work.

The end of the week and the hours leading up to kickoff are perilous times with injuries, last-minute decisions and more altering the playing field.

Within, let's combat these factors with a predictive look at stock changes and how owners should proceed at notable spots.

Stock Up: Tevin Coleman, RB, Atlanta Falcons ($4,300)

Tevin Coleman will see starter snaps this weekend.
Tevin Coleman will see starter snaps this weekend.

It's Tevin Coleman time for the Atlanta Falcons.

Starting back Devonta Freeman, this year's biggest breakout star, won't play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, according to NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon.

This opens up quite the interesting play for daily owners who need breathing room when it comes to cap space. Coleman only ran 17 times for 48 yards in relief last week, but opportunities will equal production now that he has a full week of prep as starter under his belt.

The Vikings have been solid against the run this year, but Green Bay backs just racked up more than 100 rushing yards against them in Week 11. Coleman can do similar damage, as the Vikings will have to focus on Matt Ryan and Co. through the air, more than justifying his asking price.

Stock Down: Travis Kelce, TE, Kansas City Chiefs, ($4,700)

2 of 7

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce continues to skate by as a high-upside player at a decent cost.

There's no reason to take a gamble on a guy stuck in a miserable offense this week, though. Kelce has double digits in just five games this year, and it's hard to imagine he makes it a sixth against the Buffalo Bills, a defense that has coughed up just three touchdowns to the position this year.

To make matters even worse, Kelce hurt himself in practice this week, as ESPN.com's Adam Teicher explained: "The Chiefs listed Charcandrick West and Travis Kelce, who injured his ankle in practice, as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills on their final injury report of the week."

Given the situation, owners will want to look elsewhere at this price. The Cleveland Browns' Gary Barnidge ($4,800) isn't a huge uptick in cost, and the New Orleans Saints' Benjamin Watson ($4,000) represents huge savings, to name a few.

Stock Up: Jordan Reed, TE, Washington ($5,100)

3 of 7

Apparently Washington tight end Jordan Reed is just fine.

Folks know Reed as one of the most explosive players at his position, as noted by his outbursts of 17.9, 30.2 and 19.3 points this year. They also know, though, that he's one of the most consistent names on injury reports.

It's a surprise, then, that Washington didn't even list him on the report for this weekend after he exited last week's game with what looked like a serious knee injury.

DraftKings' Adam Levitan put it best: "Redskins don't even list Jordan Reed (knee) on their Wednesday injury report. Full practice ahead up dream matchup with NYG."

Call it a huge win for owners who want to splurge at the position. The New York Giants have allowed seven scores to tight ends this year, three outings of more than 100 yards and two touchdowns to the position just one week ago.

Now healthy, Reed looks like one of the locks of the week.

Stock Down: Philip Rivers, QB, San Diego Chargers ($6,700)

4 of 7

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers continues to spiral down the drain.

Since a 31.12-point showing in Week 6, he's posted lines of 30.44, 27.04, 15.2 and 6.92 points. Those around him continue to drop like flies, and now all one has to do is look at the team's latest injury report to see more damage.

There, the report states that guard D.J. Fluker will miss this week's game and tackle King Dunlap has a "doubtful" tag.

In other words, what was once an appetizing matchup in what could have been a shootout with the Jacksonville Jaguars looks like an impending dud in a potential run-first encounter.

With the chance Rivers winds up on his back more often than usual while throwing to a backup-worthy crop of talent, owners need to look elsewhere. The Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger touts the same price, and any number of talents such as the Cincinnati Bengals' Andy Dalton and the Oakland Raiders' Derek Carr, among others, tout cheaper price tags.

Stock Up: John Brown, WR, Arizona Cardinals ($5,000)

John Brown looks back to full health this week.
John Brown looks back to full health this week.

Now would be the time to buy up all the shares of Arizona Cardinals wideout John Brown.

This is the cheapest Brown has been since Week 1, and it couldn't have come at a better time—he has a matchup against the woeful San Francisco 49ers, and his name comes up as "probable" on the injury report after weeks of hobbling around the field.

Granted, Brown only caught three passes against San Francisco the first time the rivals encountered one another. But look at it this way: Those catches went for more than 20 yards a pop.

Pair that with health and consistent usage, and Brown's stock looks back to its normal high ways.

Stock Down: Thomas Rawls, RB, Seattle Seahawks ($4,500)

6 of 7
Thomas Rawls sits in this weekend's toughest matchup.
Thomas Rawls sits in this weekend's toughest matchup.

Yes, Seattle Seahawks running back Thomas Rawls enters this week off an epic 43.5-point outburst.

The positives seem to end there, though. For one, Rawls did that damage against the aforementioned miserable 49ers. Most defenses in the league won't let him run for more than 200 yards on seven yards per carry.

Especially not the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers surrender just 93 rushing yards per game for the sixth-best mark in the league, and they have allowed just two scores to running backs all season.

Rawls will get the every-down usage this week with Marshawn Lynch out of the picture, but one outburst that has the hype machine rolling at an epic clip might wind up doing owners a disservice.

While he's a good price, a low-scoring defensive affair against one of the league's best defenses doesn't bode well for Rawls—especially if his team falls behind to a potent offense led by Big Ben.

Stock Up: Jarvis Landry, WR, Miami Dolphins ($6,600)

7 of 7

As it turns out, fantasy owners will have one of the league's most consistent producers on the field this weekend.

Jarvis Landry of the Miami Dolphins had been a question mark for most of the week until the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Chris Perkins spoke with head coach Dan Campbell: "Campbell said Landry (knee) sat today to be ready for Sunday. Campbell feels good about Landry playing Sunday."

This means owners will have the option to play a mid-tier priced wideout who has hit double digits in every game this year thanks to his uncanny ability to produce by various means, even when the team suffered early in the season before making a coaching change.

Even better for those who decide to roll the dice on Landry, the New York Jets won't have Darrelle Revis for the contest, who will miss the game due to a concussion, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

The door's ajar for Landry to post massive numbers, meaning his stock couldn't be higher.
