Smith's Injury Robs QB of Opportunity to Prove Himself to Jets
Smith completed four of eight passes for 95 yards and a touchdown before exiting.
After Ryan Fitzpatrick's rough start to the season, which saw the Jets go 1-5 out of the gate, Smith was named the team's starter entering Week 7.
Smith was tabbed as New York's starter entering the 2015 season, but that changed when he infamously suffered a broken jaw after being punched by former Jets and current Buffalo Bills defensive end IK Enemkpali.
That forced Smith to miss the first several games of the season, allowing Fitzpatrick to take hold of the No. 1 spot under center.
The former West Virginia standout got a chance to play against the Oakland Raiders in Week 8 last season when Fitzpatrick exited with a thumb injury, but Smith ended up suffering shoulder and abdomen ailments in that contest as well.
Fitzpatrick was able to return and start the next game and played well enough to keep the starting job for the remainder of the year.
While it took longer than most expected to get a deal done, the Jets re-signed Fitzpatrick during the offseason, relegating Smith to backup duty. With Fitzpatrick turning the ball over at an alarming rate, however, Bowles made a desperation move.
As New York's starter in 2013 and 2014, Smith went just 11-18 and threw 25 touchdown passes to go along with 34 interceptions, so there was little reason to believe he was the cure to what ailed the Jets.
Even so, Smith's injury pressed Fitzpatrick back into action. That may not necessarily be a bad thing for the Jets, however, since he has proved to be a better option than Smith when he is on his game.
New York isn't limited to going with a veteran, though, as youngsters Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are also on the roster if Bowles decides he wants to get a look at what the future could hold.
