Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 10 Big Board
The juggling act of how to rank talented players in tough matchups might be one of the more frustrating aspects of fantasy football.
While you must respect a great defense and/or defensive player, we too often overlook the talent of the offensive player in question. A perfect example came last week when Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Allen Robinson faced the New York Jets. You were fair to lower expectations, thinking Robinson would see a lot of cornerback Darrelle Revis, but you shouldn’t have buried him.
Not only did Robinson come through with six receptions for 121 yards, but the Jaguars also got strong performances out of wide receiver Allen Hurns (five receptions, 122 yards and a touchdown) and quarterback Blake Bortles (381 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions), proving that talent must be respected on both sides and that great defenses shouldn’t always be put on a pedestal.
Fantasy owners could be facing similar questions this week with the Arizona Cardinals taking on the Seattle Seahawks. Over the last four weeks, Seattle has the second-best defense against fantasy quarterbacks and the best defense against fantasy wide receivers. I don’t have Carson Palmer, Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown ranked as high as usual, but they’re not buried either.
A tough matchup might be the tiebreaker when determining who to start, but you shouldn’t be rushing to bench your best players just because it might not be easy for them to rack up the fantasy points. Be sure to consider how difficult they can make things for opposing defenses.
Now, it’s on to my early look at the Week 10 rankings. Choose your lineup wisely.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early-afternoon games Sunday.

Quarterbacks: Mr. Fix It
2 of 7
Better than usual
- Blake Bortles, Jac: Considering Bortles put up good numbers against the Jets last week, you have to be excited for the chance he'll follow that up with the Baltimore Ravens on tap in Week 10. Over the last four weeks, the Ravens have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks.
Worse than usual
- Carson Palmer, Ari: Cardinals come out of the bye on top of the NFC West, but they’ll get an immediate challenge from the Seahawks. While Palmer’s been in the top-five conversation all season, expectations have to be lowered against a Seahawks defense that’s given up just 490 passing yards in the last three games.
Avoid
- Marcus Mariota, Ten: If you took a shot on Mariota last week, the results were great, but I implore you not to double down. Mariota was lucky enough to draw the New Orleans Saints last week and took advantage, but it will be much more of a struggle against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Sleepers
- Kirk Cousins, Was: This is likely the only time all season I’ll give any kind of endorsement to Cousins, but that’s how bad the New Orleans defense is against QBs. Over the last four weeks, the Saints have given up the most fantasy points to QBs thanks to 1,349 passing yards and 15 touchdowns.
- Joe Flacco, Bal: Flacco and the Ravens have been major disappointments this season, so he hasn’t been fantasy-relevant often. However, he’s playing in a potentially high-scoring matchup with the Jaguars this weekend. The Jags are a bottom-10 defense against fantasy quarterbacks.

Running Backs: Turning the Corner
3 of 7
Better than usual
- DeAngelo Williams, Pit: As long as the foot issue that’s kept Williams out of practice doesn’t linger into the weekend, he’ll have a great chance at another big fantasy performance when he faces the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Cleveland has allowed 528 rushing yards and two touchdowns to running backs over the last month.
- LeGarrette Blount, NE: When the New England Patriots have a favorable matchup for the run, you can be sure Blount will be heavily involved, and that should be the case in Week 10 against the New York Giants. Blount would be ranked high with or without Dion Lewis, but because Lewis is out for the season, he gets an extra bump. Running backs facing the Giants have scored the ninth-most fantasy points in the last four weeks.
- Other: DeMarco Murray, Phi
Worse than usual
- Chris Johnson, Ari: It’s been almost all about Johnson on the ground for the Cardinals, so we’ll see if they switch anything up coming out of the bye. Facing the Seahawks is a major concern, as they’ve held running backs to just 235 rushing yards in the last three games.
Avoid
- New York Giants running backs other than Shane Vereen: Vereen stands out from the rest of this backfield because he has a somewhat consistent role as a receiver. Rashad Jennings, Orleans Darkwa and Andre Williams find themselves in a committee without any direction or consistent production. Oh, and they face a Patriots defense that’s given up just 199 rushing yards over the last four weeks.
Sleepers
- James Starks, GB: With Eddie Lacy struggling to get anything going and battling a groin injury, Starks looks like the lead back for the Green Bay Packers. He gets a fantasy boost this weekend because he faces a Detroit Lions defense that’s given up 343 rushing yards and five touchdowns to running backs in the last three games.
- Ryan Mathews, Phi: Even though DeMarco Murray continues to lead the way in the Philadelphia Eagles backfield, Mathews has been efficient with his playing time and remains an important part of the offense. The Miami Dolphins visit Sunday as one of the easiest defenses for fantasy running backs to face over the last month.

Wide Receivers: Bank on Beckham
4 of 7
Better than usual
- Allen Robinson, Jac: Robinson has been in the WR1 conversation all season, so he is one of the best options this week thanks to a boost from his matchup against Baltimore. In their last three games, the Ravens have given up 51 receptions, 567 yards and seven touchdowns to wide receivers, which is why they’re the second-worst defense against fantasy wide receivers over the last month.
- Brandin Cooks/Willie Snead, NO: It took longer than expected, but the Saints finally have their passing game clicking, and the production should continue when they take on the Washington Redskins in Week 10. Washington is a bottom-10 defense against fantasy wide receivers in the last four weeks. The Saints don’t have much of a defense either, so they have even more reason to throw it.
Worse than usual
- Larry Fitzgerald/Michael Floyd/John Brown, Ari: The Cardinals and the Seahawks come off the bye week to face each other in what should be a tough matchup for Fitzgerald, Floyd and Brown. Seattle’s defense is the best against fantasy wide receivers over the last month, having given up just 15 receptions for 158 yards to wide receivers in the last three games.
Avoid
- Jeremy Maclin, KC: Even with Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib serving a one-game suspension in Week 10, you’d be best served staying away from Maclin if possible, as he’ll get plenty of attention from cornerback Chris Harris and a deep Denver secondary. The Broncos have been a top-four defense against fantasy wide receivers in the last four weeks.
Sleepers
- Kamar Aiken, Bal: Aiken was one of the hot waiver-wire pickups of the last two weeks after the team lost Steve Smith to a torn Achilles in Week 8. Aiken is atop the Baltimore depth chart and could pay big dividends to those who grabbed him thanks to a beatable matchup against the Jaguars in Week 10. Jacksonville has allowed the third-most fantasy points to wide receivers in the last month, and this game could be a high-scoring affair with a pair of bad defenses.
- DeSean Jackson, Was: It’s weird calling Jackson a sleeper, but with a grand total of three receptions for 15 yards in two games this season, he has a lot to prove. If his season has a chance to take off, it should come against the Saints on Sunday. No team has given up more fantasy points to wide receivers in the last month thanks to 57 receptions, 797 yards and 10 touchdowns. If you stashed Jackson away, this is the game you’ve been waiting for since he went down in Week 1.

Tight Ends: Health Is Wealth
5 of 7
Better than usual
- Jordan Reed, Was: Reed was able to escape the Week 9 loss to the Patriots with a garbage-time touchdown. He shouldn’t need garbage time to produce in this week’s matchup with the Saints. New Orleans has one of the worst defenses in the league, and they’ve given up the sixth-most fantasy points against tight ends in the last four weeks. Reed is arguably the only reliable fantasy option from the Redskins.
- Eric Ebron, Det: The Packers have looked beatable in recent weeks, so it’s fair to be excited about Ebron’s chances against them this weekend. They’re a bottom-three defense against tight ends over the last month, and Ebron should be an active target in their first meeting of the season.
Worse than usual
- Julius Thomas, Jac: Thomas has been useless this season, with just 13 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown in four games. This week he faces the Ravens, and they’ve been a top-six defense against fantasy tight ends over the last month.
Avoid
- None of note.
Sleepers
- Kyle Rudolph, Min: The Oakland Raiders have given up a touchdown to a tight end in all but one game this season. Rudolph’s been quiet, but if the Minnesota Vikings expect to hang with what’s become a dangerous Raiders passing attack, they’ll need to get more than just wide receiver Stefon Diggs going in this matchup. It’s a perfect week to get Rudolph involved, so he’s worth using in Week 10 against a defense that’s allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to tight ends over the last four weeks.

Defense/Special Teams: Wild Cats
6 of 7
Best options based on matchups
- Carolina Panthers (at Ten): Carolina faces a Tennessee Titans defense that’s given up 14 sacks and five interceptions in the last four weeks. This is a big step up in competition for the Titans after they faced a porous Saints defense last week. Only the Browns have allowed more fantasy points to defenses than the Titans in the last month.
- St. Louis Rams (vs. Chi): The Rams are among the best fantasy defenses on the season, so they’re a tough matchup for anyone. Over the last month, the Chicago Bears have allowed the 12th-most fantasy points to opposing defenses. While he’s done a good job protecting the ball, quarterback Jay Cutler is never far from making a mistake, especially if the Rams can turn up the heat and get pressure on him.
- Green Bay Packers (vs. Det): Despite their struggles in recent weeks, the Packers should get back on track against the visiting Lions this week. Detroit has allowed 15 sacks and the seventh-most fantasy points to defenses in the last month.
- Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. Cle): The Steelers haven't been bad as a fantasy defense, and they get one of the biggest boosts in Week 10 because of their matchup with the Cleveland Browns. No team has allowed more fantasy points to defenses than the Browns in the last four weeks.

Kickers: Ride Your Horses
7 of 7
Best options widely available on the waiver wire
- Connor Barth, TB: Barth remains one of the hottest kickers in all of fantasy football, missing just one of 14 field-goal attempts in four games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has at least three field goals in four games. The Buccaneers offense has been good enough to give Barth opportunities, and that should continue against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10.
- Graham Gano, Car: Playing for a good team always helps a kicker, especially when that team has a good but not great offense. Gano has taken advantage of those opportunities with the Panthers. Look for more of the same when the Panthers take on the Titans this week.
