Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 7 Big Board
Amazingly, we’re already approaching the midway point of the fantasy regular season. Time may be flying, but only your record indicates if you’re having fun.
With six weeks of games already behind us, the sample size is big enough to have strong opinions on players and defenses, so matchup analysis should only get stronger. To that point, I would suggest looking at the last four weeks of games when checking out statistics. Doing so gives you the best indicator of trends while using the most recent information.
If you have stash-and-hope players such as New England Patriots wide receiver Brandon LaFell or Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, there’s a chance both could return to action in Week 7. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant hasn’t been ruled out by the team and is 50-50 to play, according to NFL Network’s Rand Getlin. That would be a huge boost for the Cowboys and fantasy owners who’ve been holding onto Dez.
With the Chicago Bears, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Denver Broncos and the Green Bay Packers off, it’s a brutal week to deal with the bye, so you may be reaching a bit deeper into your roster to fill out your starting lineup, Unfortunately, the waiver wire for Week 7 is one of the weakest of the season. That makes lineup construction that much more difficult, so be sure to be on top of the latest information when it comes to news and injuries.
Also, don’t forget that the first Sunday game takes place at 9:30 a.m. ET, when the Jacksonville Jaguars face the Buffalo Bills in London, England. That’s an early start, and both sides have injury issues to deal with heading into this game.
The Bills have concerns with quarterback Tyrod Taylor (knee) and wide receivers Sammy Watkins (ankle) and Percy Harvin (hip). Jacksonville hopes running back T.J. Yeldon (groin), wide receiver Allen Robinson (knee) and tight end Julius Thomas (hip) are healthy enough to play.
Let’s jump into this week’s rankings at each position.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early-afternoon games Sunday.

Quarterbacks: Time to Fix It
2 of 7
Better than usual
- Andrew Luck, Ind: Luck is coming off his best game of the season in what was a loss to the Patriots, but he should have a chance to build on that against the New Orleans Saints. The Saints have been a bottom-five defense against quarterbacks in the last four weeks.
- Eli Manning, NYG: In what you have to call a "burn the tape" game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, Manning was the second-worst fantasy quarterback to play an entire game in Week 6. He’s a top-10 QB over the last four weeks and should have a good chance to get over last week’s disaster against a Cowboys defense that’s allowed the second-most fantasy points to QBs in the last four weeks.
- Others: Drew Brees, NO; Russell Wilson, Sea
Worse than usual
- Cam Newton, Car: Newton hung in there to lead a comeback victory over the Seattle Seahawks last week. This week, he faces the Eagles at home in a somewhat tricky matchup. They’ve given up an average of about 274 yards and 1.5 touchdowns to QBs through the air in their last four games. They’re the second-highest scoring fantasy defense over than span.
Avoid
- Colin Kaepernick, SF: Kaepernick deserves credit for taking advantage of two beatable matchups in the last two weeks when he faced the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens. If you picked him up and used him in those two games, be prepared to look elsewhere for a quarterback this week, as Kaepernick is facing the visiting Seahawks. They’re a top-10 defense against QBs in the last four weeks.
Sleepers
- None of note, although I'd take a look at Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger if he has to start for the injured Marcus Mariota (knee) against the Atlanta Falcons.

Running Backs: Find Some Shade
3 of 7
Better than usual
- LeSean McCoy, Buf: McCoy returned from his hamstring injury earlier than expected and had a successful outing in Week 6 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He performed well in a tough matchup, so expectations should be much higher against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Over the last four weeks, they’ve allowed the second-most fantasy points to running backs. Buffalo has injury concerns at QB and WR, and McCoy won’t have any real competition for touches since Karlos Williams will likely remain sidelined with a concussion (he didn't travel to London, per Matthew Fairburn of the Post Standard), so it could be a busy Sunday afternoon for McCoy.
- Frank Gore, Ind: Gore hasn’t put up flashy numbers, but he continues to chug along with a solid fantasy season and had 94 total yards in the Week 7 loss to the Patriots. This week, he faces a New Orleans Saints defense that’s allowed the sixth-most fantasy points to RBs over the last four weeks. Even with Ahmad Bradshaw in the mix, it should be a busy and productive week for Gore.
- Others: Todd Gurley, StL
Worse than usual
- Justin Forsett, Bal: An ankle injury nearly kept Forsett out of action in Week 6, but he played through it and totaled 101 yards in the loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The Ravens complete the Week 7 schedule in Arizona against the Cardinals on Monday night. Arizona has been a top-five defense against fantasy running backs, and because Baltimore’s defense is so bad, Forsett’s only chance of producing may have to come through the air. He’ll be active enough to use, but don’t be too excited about Forsett’s fantasy prospects this week.
- Dion Lewis/LeGarrette Blount, NE: Lewis cooled off in Week 6, as he attempted to play though an abdomen injury in a great matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. Blount led the way and totaled 104 yards with a pair of scores. It’ll be hard to expect much out of either player when the Patriots host the New York Jets. RBs have scored the fifth-fewest fantasy points against the Jets over the last four weeks.
- Others: Carlos Hyde, SF
Avoid
- Melvin Gordon, SD: Gordon’s rookie year hasn’t gone according to plan, and with two fumbles last week, he found himself on the bench in favor of Branden Oliver. Gordon has to earn some trust back and might not get a lot of chances to do so against the Oakland Raiders this week. Not only will he have Danny Woodhead and Oliver in front of him, but the Raiders have given up just 180 rushing yards and the fewest fantasy points to running backs in their last three games as well.
Sleepers
- Christine Michael, Dal: This could be the week Michael supporters have been waiting for since he signed with the Cowboys, and it may go all the way back to when the Seahawks initially drafted him in 2013. All signs point to Michael taking over for Joseph Randle this week when the Cowboys face the Giants for the second time this season. After a strong start, the Giants are now an average defense against fantasy running backs and come off a loss to the Eagles in which they allowed 153 rushing yards and a touchdown on 33 carries. Michael is drawing a favorable matchup in what may be the most active game of his career.

Wide Receivers: Double Trouble
4 of 7
Better than usual
- Larry Fitzgerald/John Brown, Ari: Somehow, the Cardinals lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week even though Fitzgerald and Brown combined for 18 receptions and 289 yards. They get another favorable matchup in Week 7 on Monday night against the Ravens, who have been a bottom-two defense against wide receivers in the last four weeks. Both Fitzgerald and Brown have the upside to be top-10 fantasy wide receivers this week.
- Antonio Brown/Martavis Bryant, Pit: Brown and Bryant have a chance to build something new and dangerous for the Steelers, but can they overcome a bad quarterback situation? Michael Vick has a hamstring injury, and the team is prepared to start Landry Jones if Ben Roethlisberger isn’t back from his knee injury. I’m willing to bounce Brown and Bryant up because they have the best possible wide receiver matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Worse than usual
- Jordan Matthews, Phi: Mistakes continue to cost Matthews, and while he’s having a decent fantasy season, it could be a lot better. It’ll likely get worse first in a tough matchup with the Carolina Panthers, who have been a top-10 defense against fantasy wide receivers this season. It’s hard to guess what will happen with the Eagles offense on given week, so you’re better off downgrading Matthews in this game.
Avoid
- Anquan Boldin/Torrey Smith, SF: The 49ers passing attack has come alive the last two weeks, but that may have something to do with the team's opponents (the Giants and the Ravens). It’ll be much tougher to keep it up against Seattle on Thursday night. While the Seahawks have blown leads in back-to-back games, their defense is the best against fantasy wide receivers in the last four weeks. It won’t be easy for Kaepernick, so avoid Boldin and Smith this week.
Sleepers
- Stefon Diggs, Min: I loved Diggs as a sleeper last week, but he exceeded my expectations, although it came against the Chiefs, the worst pass defense in the league. Luckily, Diggs draws another favorable matchup against the Detroit Lions. With just one win on the season, it’s no surprise Detroit is a bottom-10 defense against fantasy wide receivers over its last four games. If he keeps his role in the starting lineup, Diggs could have another big game, and that’s looking like a legit possibility.
- Michael Floyd, Ari: Floyd is coming off his best game of the season, posting five receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown during a loss to the Steeler. For the first time since 2013, I have some confidence in his fantasy value. Obviously, playing with Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown takes some attention away from Floyd, and the Cardinals love to throw it, which should give Floyd plenty of chances to build on last week’s performance when he faces the Ravens, one of the worst defenses in football.

Tight Ends: Two for One
5 of 7
Better than usual
- Jimmy Graham, Sea: Last week, Graham’s big performance was a pleasant surprise in a tough matchup with the Panthers. He’ll have a chance to keep it going against San Francisco on Thursday night. The 49ers have been a bottom-10 group against fantasy TEs over the past four weeks, and you have to think quarterback Russell Wilson will continue to look Graham’s way after last week’s huge game.
Worse than usual
- Gary Barnidge, Cle: In yet another big performance, Barnidge managed to stay fantasy-relevant in a tough matchup with the Denver Broncos by turning two of his three receptions into touchdowns. He had just 39 yards on the day, so the scoring was huge. The Cleveland Browns get another stiff test when they take on the Rams in St. Louis. Over the last four weeks, the Rams have the second-toughest defense against tight ends, so Barnidge may have a tough time keeping his hot streak going in Week 7.
Avoid
- None of note.
Sleepers
- Ladarius Green, SD: Green has been nothing but productive this season with and without Antonio Gates, but he’s been overlooked despite the consistent production, including a touchdown in last week’s loss to the Packers. With wide receivers Keenan Allen (hip) and Stevie Johnson (hamstring) nursing injuries, Green remains relevant, especially in a matchup against Oakland, which has been the easiest defense for fantasy tight ends this season.

Defense/Special Teams: Sacks on Sacks
6 of 7
Best options based on matchups
- Seattle Seahawks (at SF): While the team's record sits at a disappointing 2-4, Seattle’s defense is a top-four fantasy unit over the last four games and should be able to remain there when the Seahawks face the 49ers on Thursday. San Francisco has allowed the second-most fantasy points to defenses in the last four weeks.
- St. Louis Rams (vs. Cle): Racking up sacks is the name of the game for the Rams, and they should be able to do some damage against the Browns in Week 7. Cleveland has given up 17 sacks in the last four weeks.
- Minnesota Vikings (at Det): Head coach Mike Zimmer is starting to put together a solid defense in Minnesota, and I fully expect the Vikings to give the Lions problems in their second meeting of the season on Sunday. Detroit has given up the sixth-most fantasy points to defenses in its last four games.
- Atlanta Falcons (at Ten): Much like the job the defensive-minded Zimmer has done in Minnesota, Falcons head coach Dan Quinn has turned the defense around, and Atlanta has been a top-10 fantasy unit in the last month. In what might be the best matchup play of the week, the Falcons get the Titans. Not only have they allowed the most fantasy points in the last four weeks, but they also might be without starting quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee).

Kickers: Nothing Wrong with Reliable
7 of 7
Best options widely available on the waiver wire
- Chandler Catanzaro, Ari: Catanzaro has been a top-five option over the past four weeks and is still up for grabs in many leagues. This would be a good time to get him. The Cardinals have allowed him to kick more extra points than any kicker in the league, and there could be a lot more of that this week against the porous Baltimore defense.
- Travis Coons, Cle: With the uptick in offensive production from the Browns comes a legitimate fantasy kicker in Coons. He’s been a top-three option at the position in the last four weeks. The Browns get a tough matchup against the Rams, but they should move the ball enough to get Coons more field-goal attempts.
