Will Oakland Make Good on Status as Favorite?
For this first time in 27 games, per ESPN.com's Bill Williamson, the Oakland Raiders are favored to win. They're playing the hapless Chicago Bears in Chicago a week after the team was shut out against the Seattle Seahawks and saw every single one of their possessions end in a punt. It was so bad, it may have ruined the Bears punter Pat O'Donnell.
According to ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio, O'Donnell is questionable for Sunday with a right knee injury. Chicago has signed Spencer Lanning as insurance, per Florio.
Don't think the gamblers have pegged Oakland as favorites solely on the Bears' miserable performances this season. The Sliver and Black have a winning record, an emerging quarterback-wide receiver combo and plenty of talent on the defensive side of the ball.
Derek Carr is making huge strides at quarterback in his sophomore year. He's completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 726 yards, five scores and just one interception. Rookie Amari Cooper has emerged as an instant threat, with 20 receptions for 290 yards and one touchdown.
Veteran wideout Michael Crabtree is right behind him with 18 catches for 184 yards and a trip to the end zone, while running back Latavius Murray is averaging 4.8 yards per carry. ESPN's Mike Clay noted Crabtree has been a focal point of the offense:
On defense, young bucks Khalil Mack and Aldon Smith are busy harassing the quarterback, while 26-year-old linebacker and Super Bowl XLVIII MVP Malcolm Smith leads the team in tackles. Oh, and they still have Charles Woodson turning back the clock in the secondary. Here he is sealing a win over Cleveland in Week 3, per the NFL:
Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio has had high praise for Woodson, via CBS Sports' Jim Rome:
The Bears could receive a boost on offense if Jay Cutler and Alshon Jeffery suit up. Both players missed the Seattle shutout and are listed as questionable for Sunday, per ChicagoBears.com. Matt Forte is always dangerous, so the Raiders will need to stay disciplined and limit his effectiveness in the rushing game, lest they have to back off attacking either Cutler or Jimmy Clausen.
Things are looking good for the Raiders, but bettor beware. The last time Oakland was considered favorites, it hardly went well. They lost to the Philadelphia Eagles at home 49-20, per Williamson. There is again a glimmer of hope for football fans in Oakland; it's time for a young squad to go out and deliver in a game they should win comfortably.
Questionable Luck Means Big Opportunity for Jacksonville

Keeping in the theme of franchises on the rise after much time in the NFL cellar, Jacksonville has quite the opportunity on Sunday, even if Andrew Luck is healthy enough to play. Luck is questionable after suffering a right shoulder injury in Week 3 against Tennessee, per ESPN.com's Mike Wells.
Every team in the AFC South is 1-2 to start the season. Houston has already switched starting quarterbacks and has been missing Arian Foster—although he could play Sunday, per ESPN.com's Tania Ganguli—while the Tennessee Titans are starting rookie Marcus Mariota at quarterback and are sure to experience all the growing pains that come along with such an experiment.
Houston has a tough matchup on the road against Atlanta, while the Titans are off. Jacksonville could very well take a surprise early lead in the AFC South on Sunday.
Even if Luck does play, there's no guarantee he will play up to his usual standard, especially dealing with an arm injury. Luck has five touchdowns against a league-leading seven interceptions this season.
Gregg Doyel of the Indianapolis Star noted that potential starter Matt Hasselbeck at least looked good in practice this week:
"...The Colts’ potential starter Sunday, 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck, looked terrific at practice. He was throwing against air, and air probably isn’t as competitive as the Jacksonville Jaguars, but his passes had zip and accuracy. On one throw he rolled right, giving speedy rookie Phillip Dorsett time to make a double move before heading deep. On the run, Hasselbeck hit Dorsett in stride.
That came a few snaps after Hasselbeck dropped back, giving T.Y. Hilton time to run deep, before hitting Hilton in stride in the end zone. Hilton was screaming joyously even as he caught it, and was still screaming happily as the reps continued 50 yards up the field.
"
That's all well and good, but one has to wonder how the 40-year-old quarterback will hold up behind the Colts' porous offensive line. Jacksonville has racked up six sacks on the season, a middling pace. They can expect more on Sunday no matter who is the quarterback.
Plus, the last time Hasselbeck started a game was in 2012 for the Tennessee Titans and he wasn't exactly inspiring. He completed 20 of 35 passes for 200 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
This team could be leaning heavily on Frank Gore, who had a fine game in Week 3, per Colts.com's Kevin Bowen:
If the Jags' own offensive line can do a better job of protecting Blake Bortles (sacked seven times this season) and give him time to hit the likes of Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns downfield, the Jags could win this game on the road.
