Daily Fantasy Football September 21: DFS Stock Up, Stock Down
After two weeks of the 2015 NFL season, the ever-changing adventure that is daily fantasy football has raised some stocks and dropped a few others.
Two offenses many expected to light up the scoreboard—and rack up fantasy points—have battled through especially disappointing openings to the campaign and likely won't be efficient plays in Week 3.
On the other hand, a couple of potential breakout candidates have started to back up the preseason hype and could solidify themselves as fixtures in DFS lineups throughout the next few games.
As always, consider DraftKings prices carefully when they're released later on this week, because that's undoubtedly the most important variable. Nevertheless, use the following information as a guide for your next contest.
Stock Up: Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins
1 of 5
Yes, the Miami Dolphins lost, but fantasy football typically doesn't care whether a particular team posts a victory.
Ryan Tannehill tallied 359 yards and two touchdowns, adding 17 rushing yards and avoiding an interception for a total of 27.06 points. Nevertheless, only 1.9 percent of Millionaire Maker entries listed Tannehill on the roster.
His limited usage is an appealing fact for next week when the Dolphins take on the Buffalo Bills, who boast a tremendous run defense. However, the Bills surrendered 466 yards and three touchdowns to the New England Patriots on Sunday.
Miami offensive coordinator Bill Lazor has basically refused to run the ball through two games, and the Dolphins likely won't be capable of running next week anyway. Tannehill should be strongly considered for Week 3 lineups.
Stock Down: New Orleans Saints
2 of 5
Sunday was supposed to be a bounce-back game for the entire New Orleans Saints offense. The matchup could hardly have been more favorable.
But after a 26-19 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, trouble is brewing in the Bayou.
"I've never seen [quarterback Drew] Brees as down at a postgame presser as I have today," Larry Holder of the Times-Picayune said after the contest.
If Brees (255 yards, one touchdown, one interception), running back Mark Ingram (58 yards, one touchdown, one fumble) and wide receiver Brandin Cooks (62 yards) couldn't shred a defense that allowed 42 points to the Tennessee Titans just last week, it's time to temporarily stop singing the praises of the Saints.
Stock Up: Shane Vereen, New York Giants
3 of 5
Shane Vereen's value all depends on price. Duh, right? Yes, but the New York Giants running back is an option solely because of his points-per-reception upside. Though Vereen has only logged nine carries so far this season, he's grabbed 12 passes.
On Sunday, he accumulated eight receptions for 76 yards, easily paying off a $4,200 cost even without a touchdown. Vereen totaled 17.5 points in the 24-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
New York's next outing is against Washington, which will be played on Thursday night—a day notorious for sloppy offense, and that means short passes. Then, the Giants host Buffalo, and they're certainly not running the football on the Bills.
If Vereen's price tag doesn't move much, he's a money-saving target who can supplement the stars in your lineup.
Stock Down: DeMarco Murray, Philadelphia Eagles
4 of 5
The Philadelphia Eagles offense has looked borderline inept, and the run blocking—at least when DeMarco Murray takes a handoff—has been nonexistent.
Murray scored a pair of touchdowns in the season opener, but he managed a putrid nine yards on eight carries. Then on Sunday, he carried the ball 13 times and registered two—count 'em—two yards.
Although the 27-year-old added five receptions for 53 yards, Darren Sproles is the better pass-catching option, and no one should be spending $7,000 on a running back who doesn't run.
Until Philadelphia consistently blocks for Murray, he's a tremendously risky play. Seek out the handful of safer options instead.
Stock Up: Allen Robinson, Jacksonville Jaguars
5 of 5
A one-catch, 27-yard performance in Week 1 scared off many Allen Robinson believers, but the Jacksonville Jaguars wideout revived that faith on Sunday.
He tallied six catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns, including a 46-yard score on a gorgeous double move. Robinson had eight more targets (12) than any other teammate.
Next up for Robinson and Co. is a clash with the New England Patriots, who have allowed an average of 296.5 passing yards and two touchdowns this season. While Jacksonville will likely be trailing down the stretch, remember that fantasy football doesn't discriminate in the win-loss column.
Robinson is a solid choice as a No. 3 receiver, especially if his $4,900 price doesn't take a drastic jump.
