Indianapolis Colts Week 2 Stock Report

Kyle J. RodriguezSep 17, 2015

The Indianapolis Colts had a rough week to start the season in the understatement of the year.

As far as stocks go, the Colts' prices are dropping as quickly as anybody's. The Colts dropped from No. 4 to No. 11 in the ESPN power rankings, for example, and went from No. 8 to No. 13 in Pete Prisco of CBS Sports' rankings.

Of course, the team will have a chance to right the ship in Week 2, hosting the New York Jets in the Colts' home opener. The Jets defeated the Cleveland Browns by a lopsided 31-10 score in Week 1, but the Colts should present a much bigger challenge, especially in Indianapolis.

If the Colts are to bounce back in Week 2 and beyond, they will need better individual performances from players and coaches alike. Where is that stout play most likely to come from? Who needs to most drastically step up?

That's what we look at in this week's stock report.

Stock Down: Andrew Luck

1 of 5

When Andrew Luck isn't being a superstar, the Colts struggle.

That's exactly what happened against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. While the Colts were going up against one of the toughest defenses in the league in one of the toughest places to play (Aaron Rodgers was even worse in Buffalo last season), Luck was having one of his off days.

The Colts' fourth-year quarterback was inaccurate all day, even when the blitzes weren't landing. Luck just seemed hurried after the Colts' first series, rushing throws he didn't need to and missing open receivers as a result.

Of course, his receivers didn't do much to help him after T.Y. Hilton left with a knee bruise, but if Luck was as good as we've seen from him, the Colts win this game.

Luck has been propped up as an MVP candidate this offseason, the next young quarterback to push Aaron Rodgers for the title of best quarterback in the league. He'll have to bounce back from a disappointing start if he wants to earn his way back into that conversation.

Stock Up: Henry Anderson

2 of 5

How much more can an interior lineman do?

Henry Anderson had a J.J. Watt-esque day on Sunday, finishing with nine official tackles, three of which were for a loss. According to Pro Football Focus, Anderson's five run stops were the most of any player in the league on Sunday.

It's a positive sign for Indianapolis, which desperately needs production from its defensive line to make up for inconsistent linebackers. After Arthur Jones went down for the season a few weeks ago, it seemed like the Colts defensive line was destined to take a step back.

But with Anderson playing so well, Kendall Langford looking like a sound free-agent signing and David Parry holding his ground at nose tackle, the Colts defensive line might actually look better than last season.

The rookie defensive lineman still needs to show more penetration in pass rush to become a complete player, but the potential to be a blue-chip player for Indianapolis is there.

Stock Down: Inside Linebackers

3 of 5

While the defensive line held its own on Sunday, the inside linebackers provided the mistakes the Bills needed to move the ball.

This isn't a new theme for Indianapolis, as Jerrell Freeman and D'Qwell Jackson's inconsistencies cost the Colts big last season, especially in the losses to the New England Patriots.

But with Freeman being healthy going into this season and a few promising depth players, there was hope that the Colts could see a slight uptick in 2015. But Freeman misread the Bills offense all day in Week 1, and Sio Moore and Nate Irving saw just one combined snap.

Freeman was especially bad on Karlos Williams' 26-yard touchdown run at the end of the first half, while Jackson had his poor moments as well:

"

Does D'Qwell get credited with a Missed Tackle if he doesn't ATTEMPT the tackle? This is really bad. #ProBowl https://t.co/hxMr0C594f

— My Colts Account (@MyColtsAccount) September 14, 2015"

The Colts have to figure something out in the middle of their defense. Maybe that's Moore or Irving. Maybe it's something else. But continued play like this from the starters will kill the Colts' chances of stopping good offenses.

Stock Up: Donte Moncrief

4 of 5

While former Ole Miss wide receiver Donte Moncrief didn't have a perfect game, he was effective as the Colts' No. 3 receiver, catching six passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.

With T.Y. Hilton potentially missing a week or two with a knee bruise, Moncrief could see an even bigger role. He is much more mobile than Andre Johnson at this point, and while the former Houston Texan should see better days, Moncrief will continue to get targets.

If the young receiver gets open, Luck will throw him the ball.

There are things Moncrief can improve upon, and he will have to if he wants to be a long-term starter. His footwork near the sideline cost the Colts a first down, and the drive, on Sunday, and he's yet to show the contested catch ability of a more complete, big receiver.

Still, the opportunity is there for Moncrief, and he's taken advantage of it with production.

Stock Down: Phillip Dorsett

5 of 5

On one hand, Phillip Dorsett will see an even bigger increase in role than Donte Moncrief if T.Y. Hilton is indeed out for any length of time.

On the other, Dorsett blew his chance at a first impression on Sunday, fumbling two punts, losing one that all but sealed the game.

If the season opener was any indication, the Colts are committed to Moncrief as the No. 3 receiver rather than an even split between him and Dorsett. This, of course, severely depresses Dorsett's rookie-season value, although there is still time for him to carve out a role in the offense.

His first chance at this will be on Monday against the Jets. With Hilton likely resting his knee, Dorsett could see up to 50 snaps or so. He fits Hilton's role perfectly, with a similar skill set in terms of physical ability. If Dorsett can get open quickly like Hilton does, don't be surprised to see Luck pepper him with targets.

Dorsett only saw the field for 15 passing snaps on Sunday, per Pro Football Focus, but did catch two balls for 45 yards.
