What Early Roster Cuts Mean for Fantasy Football 2015

Richard JanvrinAug 31, 2015

Sept. 1 marks the day in which teams have to trim their rosters down to 75 players.

During this round of cuts, there are usually not that many guys who have much of a fantasy impact, but this year was headlined by a very well-known name.

On Sept. 5, teams will be forced to trim down to 53 players, and we may see a ton of surprising cuts.

After following those who were cut Monday, here are a few guys who could have a fantasy impact.

1. Ryan Broyles, WR, Detroit Lions

Ryan Broyles, also known as the former FBS all-time leading receiver, was released by the Lions on Monday. This cut came just two days after the wide receiver requested a release from the team, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Broyles had a tough go of it during his stint with the Detroit Lions.

In his career, he's posted just 32 catches for 420 yards and two touchdowns, and he struggled with injuries early and often, including both an ACL tear and a ruptured Achilles.

With Broyles departing, this will really open the doors up for Corey Fuller, Lance Moore and Jeremy Ross to battle for the Lions' third wide receiver spot.

Of course, you are avoiding those three wide receivers unless Calvin Johnson suffers another injury.

2. Denarius Moore, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

The former successful Oakland Raider was cut by the Bengals on Sunday.

After the Cincinnati Bengals signed Denarius Moore, there was speculation this was a good match for him because of who the Bengals offensive coordinator is—Hue Jackson. However, he was very unimpressive in the preseason.

In 2011, Jackson was coaching the Raiders, and Moore had his best season, catching just 33 balls but accumulating just over 600 yards and five touchdowns.

The one bright side is that Moore will have time to find a new team after being cut so early.

Moore is off all fantasy radars.

3. Trent Richardson, RB, Oakland Raiders

Oh, good Lord.

The former number three overall pick has been quite a mystery in his career.

After being cut by the Indianapolis Colts, Trent Richardson landed with the Raiders, who were kind of deep at running back but thought he may earn a roster spot.

I don't know about you, but reportedly showing up overweight and averaging just under three yards per carry in the preseason is not a way to keep a job.

Will the Richardson saga continue?

Stay tuned...oh, and stay far, far, far away from him.

4. Fred Jackson, RB, Buffalo Bills

Perhaps the most surprising (but likely) and intriguing cut of the day, I present to you Mr. Fred Jackson.

The Buffalo Bills are deep at running back with LeSean McCoy, Karlos Williams and Bryce Brown, so that left Jackson (and Ricky Seale) on the outside looking in.

At this point in his career, I don't really see Jackson as an effective rusher, but he offers some pass-game upside.

During the preseason, Jackson did rush for nearly 50 yards and a touchdown.

Some teams to pay attention to in the Jackson sweepstakes are the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys.

Jackson should only be rostered in deeper points-per-reception formats.
