Doug Martin, Charles Sims Post-Preseason Week 3 Fantasy Advice

Joseph ZuckerAug 29, 2015

Should Jameis Winston continue to have nights like he had Saturday against the Cleveland Browns, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might put the ball in the hands of Doug Martin more often, which is welcome news to those fantasy football owners who have the veteran running back on their team.

Martin was the Bucs' leading rusher in a 31-7 defeat to Cleveland. His backup, Charles Sims, had to settle for getting just three carries:

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, it's important to note Martin has played in just 17 games over the last two years, rushing for 950 yards and three touchdowns.

Now that our feet are firmly planted on the ground, let's get excited by this 19-yard touchdown (via the NFL):

Don't be crazy enough to draft Martin as an RB1 in standard 12-team leagues. As good as he has looked in the preseason, you can't forget about how disappointing he was in 2013 and 2014. Still, he'll get the bulk of the carries in the Tampa Bay backfield, and Lovie Smith will likely look to Martin a lot early on as Winston begins getting used to the NFL.

Start targeting Martin right around the fourth round in a standard league if you feel he could come off the board. Ideally, he'll slip to the fifth or sixth.

Sims will likely remain until the last few rounds. Considering the fact he's one injury away from the starting job, he'd be a smart addition. For Martin owners, Sims provides insurance at the position. For everybody else, he's still a nice option to have on your bench in case disaster strikes for the Buccaneers.
