Will Hill, Ravens Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldAug 27, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens announced Thursday that they signed talented, but previously troubled strong safety Will Hill to a two-year contract extension.

Jason Cole of Bleacher Report reported the deal is worth $7 million total, $2.84 million of which is guaranteed, with another $400,000 in incentives.

Cole added that "this is a strong indication of how much Ravens think of Hill. They see star potential along lines of Rodney Harrison/John Lynch."

Hill has been suspended three times since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2012. His most recent ban was six games and came prior to the 2014 campaign when he was a member of the New York Giants. The team waived him thereafter.

Baltimore picked Hill up last year and played him extensively when he was eligible to return. The 25-year-old appeared in 10 games and started eight, registering 42 combined tackles, four passes defended and a 44-yard pick-six.

"I wanted to be a Raven. This tells me what the organization thinks of me," Hill said after signing his new deal, per Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.

Garrett Downing of the Ravens' official website weighed in on the team's defensive backfield in light of Hill's extension:

The Ravens ranked 23rd against the pass last season, so their secondary must play at a higher level for the team to be considered a true championship contender. If Hill plays to his ability and continues to stay out of trouble, he ought to reward general manager Ozzie Newsome's faithful investment.

Hill would have been a restricted free agent this next offseason without Thursday's contract extension, per Spotrac. The hope is he can get through a 16-game season and make the most of his fresh lease on life in the NFL with one of the league's superior organizations.
