Jameis Winston vs. Vikings: Stats, Highlights and Updated 2015 Fantasy Advice

Joseph ZuckerAug 15, 2015

Jameis Winston made his first start for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night in a preseason game against the host Minnesota Vikings. The No. 1 overall draft pick looked a little unsure early on but made strides forward before exiting the game at the conclusion of the first half.

Although preseason results are relatively meaningless in the grander scale of an entire season, Winston wasn't approaching his debut with an indifferent attitude.

"My personal goal is to lead the team the right way, to lead us to a victory," he said Friday, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. "There's only so much I can do because I'm probably not going to be playing the whole game. I just want to do the right thing."

By that standard, Winston fell short of the mark. He appeared very much like a quarterback dipping his toes into the NFL water. He overthrew Austin Seferian-Jenkins with his first pass of the game, which was a bit fortuitous since an on-target attempt might have resulted in an interception, as shown by the NFL Network:

A little later in the first quarter, Winston found Vincent Jackson with a nice pass over the top of the Minnesota secondary, as illustrated by the NFL:

Winston committed the first turnover of his NFL career on Tampa Bay's next drive. Antone Exum intercepted the pass intended for Mike Evans. To be fair, it looked as though Evans was being held when the ball was in the air, so the interception wasn't all on Winston:

Poor decision-making and an anxious presence in the pocket plagued Winston through the first quarter and for much of the second. ESPN.com's Louis Riddick didn't think the Bucs could take many positives away from their first few drives:

After two more possessions came to nothing for Tampa Bay, Winston seemed to find some footing near the end of the second quarter. He completed five of six passes before scrambling into the end zone on an eight-yard touchdown run with just over a minute left until halftime.

Winston's performance on the whole heartened NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah:

Unless you're in a deep league with 15 to 20 teams, Winston shouldn't be considered a viable starting option, and you shouldn't draft him as such unless you're willing to take a massive gamble. The former Heisman Trophy winner could be an interesting sleeper candidate if you've got a more established star as your QB1.

In Jackson, Evans and Seferian-Jenkins, Winston has three solid targets in the passing game. If he limits his interceptions, he could be a consistent fantasy contributor.

More than likely, though, Winston will be a low-end Eli Manning in his rookie season. The yards and touchdowns could be there, but turnovers will hinder his overall point total.
