Jordy Nelson Injury: Updates on Packers Star's Knee and Return

Adam WellsAug 23, 2015

Jordy Nelson has developed into one of the NFL's best wide receivers, but the Green Bay Packers will be without the star deep threat this year after he suffered a season-ending knee injury in a preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 23.

Nelson Officially Hits IR

Tuesday, Sept. 1

The Packers announced the move to place their star wide receiver on the injured reserve when the team reduced its roster size to 75 on Tuesday.

Comments on Knee Injury After Diagnosis

Tuesday, Aug. 25

"I thought it would be honestly more painful than what it was," Nelson said, via Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "The shock when doc told me was a little overwhelming." The wideout added that he originally thought the injury was minor enough to walk off, per Wood.

When asked if his hip surgery could have contributed to the injury, Nelson said it "had nothing to do with it," per Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin. "It's just bad timing."

Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel provided additional comments, including Nelson's description of how the injury occurred:

"

It was when I landed. Originally I thought I landed right leg first, but obviously watching it, it was left leg and then right leg, which even is more baffling to me why it happened. So, yeah, it's one of those things. I've always honestly thought besides contact injury, I mean if you're going to tear your ACL, you're going to tear your ACL. I've seen guys tear ACLs with a knee brace on, and some of those are supposedly guaranteed to prevent you. Like I said, it is what it is, we're ready to move on, I'm not going to go in detail with what it is, but we're in a good situation. For it being what it is, and look forward to moving forward, and hopefully everyone can move forward and leave these guys alone about it so we can all can just get ready for this season and move on.

Nelson Ruled Out for Season with "Significant" Knee Injury

Monday, Aug. 24

The Packers passed along the devastating news on Monday, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. The news was expected following the Aug. 23 report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, who said the team was bracing for confirmation of a torn ACL.

After Nelson's exit from the game, the NFL shared video of the play on which he injured his knee:

“It’s difficult to lose a guy like that in a meaningless game,” Aaron Rodgers said following the game, via Around the NFL.

Nelson gave Packers fans a brief scare in the offseason when he had hip surgery, but there were no lingering effects from the procedure heading into training camp. Following Nelson's injury, the NFL shared a graphic that showed the wide receiver's impact last season:

Since missing four games in 2012, Nelson has been a steady presence in Green Bay's lineup, starting all 32 games and producing back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

The Packers can get away with some injuries on offense because Rodgers is so great, but Nelson has developed such a strong rapport with the reigning MVP that the team has to be concerned about making a Super Bowl push without its top target.
