Lovullo Comments on Buchholz's Recovery

Tuesday, Sept. 15

"He’s reporting he feels great," interim manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday, per Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald. "It’s piece by piece with him. We just have to make sure he gets out to 120 and we get him on a mound and we see where he’s at. I don’t want to guarantee that we are going to see him this season, but he’s progressing very well and showing signs that he’s going to be healthy."

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reported on Aug. 28 that Buchholz's 2016 contract option will be picked up next season if he's healthy.

Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reported he went "straight into the clubhouse" upon leaving the field with a trainer and was replaced by Robbie Ross Jr. MacPherson also noted Buchholz had never experienced elbow issues before, though he has battled shoulder and knee problems in recent years.

Buchholz has struggled since the Red Sox won the World Series in 2013. In that season, he went 12-1 in 16 starts with a 1.74 ERA, earning the second All-Star appearance of his career. His ERA ballooned to 5.34 in 2014, as he went 8-11 in 28 starts.
